Why can't Americans leave well enough alone...
  • FerrosFerros June 2008

For years and years you guys have been remaking excellent quality television from Britain. No idea why your TV executives seem to think you can't handle these shows in their natural form but they continue to remake them and leave out one important ingredient, the awesome. One of my favourite TV shows of the last couple of years was a show called Life on Mars, amazingly genius bit of TV. Modern day cop has an accident, ends up in a coma, wakes up in 1972. It's pure brilliance, funny, exciting, smart all good stuff. Someone was apparently unhappy with John Simm and Philip Glennister being brilliant and replaced them with some dude i've never heard of and Chief O'Brien from Deep Space Nine. As with all the things that get remade, it's just missing that ingredient that made it great and it's so bland and exceptionally average. Ok, this has turned into a bit of a rant so i'll stop now. It's just frustrating when you see something you like being ruined.

American entertainment is built on remakes. Hell, it's not just British shows, it's our own, too. American Gladiators? Night Rider? Yeah, we're just unoriginal.

  • jacob666jacob666 June 2008

colm meany is in so many remakes! and other stuff too, i doubt that he wakes up at 6:15am every morning and frantically calls his manager with a hearty "DIDIGETANYMOREREMAKESCRIPTS?!" that would be so awesome.

but hey buddy, at least we never remade black adder, now let's go get some iced cream.

  • ArcysArcys June 2008

It's because all the flower children are now of the age where they are in charge of the studios. All those drugs fried their brains and they can't make a smart decision on shows!

I really wish Americans were mature enough to handle shows where the good guys had foreign accents. I want my Father Ted and IT crowd...

  • SeanSean June 2008

Do you really think it's just television? Hell, just yesterday I took a ferry from NEW York to NEW Jersey!

On occasion we do get it right though. The Office is the obvious example, but don't forget about Friends, which came from Coupling. We'll just forget about the more recent attempt to make an ACTUAL American "Coupling" series.

  • KristiKristi June 2008

I dunno about that, I still like the original "Office" better than the American version. Maybe I just like British humor better. I do spend way too much time watching BBC America.

  • SeanSean June 2008

Nothing at all against the UK "Office". I have them displayed proudly in my DVD collection, right next to the American ones. My point was that we managed to not fuck it up.

  • FerrosFerros June 2008

Oh god, i'd blocked out the American version of Coupling. That show was all sorts of just awful, it was like having a badger rape your eyeballs...

  • jacob666jacob666 June 2008

and bowler hats! man we fucked that up.

  • 15step15step June 2008

I like the American version of the Office more than the British version, but that's only because the American one has succeeded in lasting a long time while constantly coming up with great storylines. I think if they would have stuck to the documentary logistics of the original (how the show seemed to work in the first season), the show would have fallen flat fast. That being said, the British one was fucking hilarious.

FREE LOVE ON THE FREE LOVE FREEWAY.

I'm really happy the plans to do an American version of Spaced got canceled. That show is brilliant. Where are they airing the bad Life On Mars remake? I've never seen the original, but I love the concept.

  • FerrosFerros June 2008

No idea where or when it's being aired, just saw it online. Go and grab the British series 15step, it really is a brilliant show.

  • EddieEddie June 2008

Unless I'm mistaken, Friends came first. Coupling didn't start until 2000.

...Not that I'm in any way defending Friends (I haven't seen Coupling, so I can't judge); it had its (very few) moments, but it was mostly the same shit over and over again.

When I was seeing this girl, she forced me to sit through the finale. Afterwards, she was crying and gushy. I felt not a thing, except maybe relief that they finally put the axe to that show.

  • FerrosFerros June 2008

I loved the finale of friends, not cause i was a big fan or cared about the show but because it gave us Joey! I love it when i know a show is going to fail miserably before it even starts.

Wikipedia says you're absolutely right. Strange, I always thought that Friends was a copy of Coupling. Now I want to know where I got that idea from!!

We need to form a fellowship and take back the ring from those damned Geico marketers.

We could forge an alliance with the Capital One horde!

  • ArcysArcys June 2008

Capital One I actually like, because they're not fucking beating it to death. If I see that caveman go buy that ad on the people mover in the airport one more time, I'm going to kill somebody.

Plus space kittens are awesome! Meow.

If anyone watched the videocast-podcast-castcast last night, you heard about the American Top Gear that's supposedly in the works. Talk about Americans ruining everything. I think that may have ruined my week.

  • FerrosFerros June 2008

@Kristi Don't worry, they're doing the same thing in Australia. I doubt either will be around for long and we'll be left in peace with the awesome that is Clarkson, Hammond and May.

Life On Mars doesn't air until the fall. Frankly, I think Ferros is being a little crazy. The remake train goes both ways.

It seems like you Brits mostly like copying our game shows, but there are scripted dramas on there as well.

is this the place to go on my tirade about asian movie remakes?

although all is almost forgiven by the near-flawless "The Departed." the orignal movie "Infernal Affairs" was badassery but i loves me some scorsese. damon, leo, and marky mark didn't hurt anything either.

One of my favorite movies is actually made better by watching both versions of it. Seeing "Seven Samurai" and then "The Magnificent Seven" back-to-back gave me a much deeper appreciation for both films. If you've never done it, I highly recommend it.

Oh, and The Ring. Beats the hell out of that Ringu crap. (*ducks*)

The original black and white seven samurai? I haven't seen that for about half a decade.

Dammit, I thought I'd found one other person who disliked "The Departed" until I read that second paragraph. I though IA was infinite times better...

Didn't Shakespeare, ah, borrow for most of his stories?

And as for using British content, perhaps I'm working under the ignorant American impression that you guys have like, three to eight channels of original programming. Where as the US churns out about twenty times that. And films, sheesh, seems you can't hardly spit without hitting a camera crew theses days. We're having to steal from everything.

But honestly? I'd rather have BBC 1-3 than the thirty channels we have on our basic cable package. Even the Discovery Channel is managing to suck lately.

I've been liking it lately, in that I enjoy seeing how things are made and Mythbusters is always a win, unless I've seen the ep too many times.

I'll file this under "Everything you love will someday be resold to you." When is this shit gonna stop? Cowboy Bebop was like, perfectly contained in it's single season. It's own movie even (I feel) detracted from the tale. I fail to see how live action will retell this story any better than has already been done. The only good thing to potentially come out of this would be more original music from Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts.
