Childhood Television Shows
  • RoeRoe July 2008

Did anyone else watch Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers? I LOVED that show... it had mechanical horses. And a guy that looked like Lando. But, like most kids in the eighties, I loved me some Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe. And, as a gal, I did have to watch the occasional Rainbow Brite, Lady Lovely Locks (ANOTHER show that I LOVED), and She-Ra. Still watch way more cartoons then I should (Avatar anyone?) and watched a ton of the Disney ones (Gummi Bears, Tailspin, Darkwing Duck...).

Awww! Reading Rainbow! I still like that show!

  • TindomielTindomiel July 2008

And Square One, with Mathnet! Oh I miss the oldschool PBS stuff.

  • EliEli July 2008

time to pull out my Ace Card
so does anyone remember watching this... Picture Pages..time to get Pens and Pencils

being a poor ass family that we were we used old papers from school and sharpie markers and made the sounds ourselves when drawing. this show was on about the same time as "You Can't Do That on Television"

You win. Oh my God, I had forgotten that ever existed.

  • FerrosFerros July 2008

Holy shit Eli, you evil bastard. Nothing to do with Picture Pages, but in the related videos section it had the intro to a show called Kids Incorporated. I used to watch the hell out of that when i was in primary school. It was a show about some kids in a band, singing in what appears to be a diner or a factory that makes rape, i can't tell the difference. I just about had a brain fart when i was watching the intro and saw the cute little cast member Stacy Ferguson and somewhere deep in the geek info recess of my brain made the connection that she is everyone's favourite pants wetting, meth addicted Black Eyed Pea Fergie! I'd call the move from Kids Incorporated to the Black Eyed Peas a career side step at best.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady July 2008

Ha! If memory serves me right, though, the eponymous "kids" had found an abandoned TV station and were using it to broadcast their pirate signal to hack into something or other. And yes I totally remember Picture Pages. And how could I forget You Can't Do That on Television? This is great stuff - keep it coming!

  • dougdoug July 2008

    So many to pick from...

Only seen when visiting family in NY, so great because of that: Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse (in reruns)

Hanna Barbera dominated most kids' tv for me. A few faves:
    Wacky Races
Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole
    Banana Splits

Sid and Marty Krofft were gods:
    The Bugaloos
    Lidsville
    Electra Woman and Dyna Girl
And, tied for the best of all:
    H.R. Pufnstuf
    Land of the Lost

And, FTW, seen in glorious B&W:
    ST:TOS

  • FerrosFerros July 2008

I loved Morocco Mole! I don't know if these were shown in America as they're british cartoons but some other excellent shows were Danger Mouse, Banana Man, Count Duckula, The Trap Door and i don't know how this hasn't been mentioned yet the always awesome Inspector Gadget! I had a couple episodes of Inspector Gadget on VHS before Star Wars: A new hope which my parents had taped off TV for me so whenever i watched Star Wars i'd watch Inspector Gadget before hand. I must've watched that tape a thousand times.

That paragraph brought back some memories, if I can remember the Banana Man song that's going in the 'themes' thread... Hmmmm...

  • FerrosFerros July 2008

Noone has mentioned Mighty Orbots yet either, a very poor Voltron rip off with a comedy bent to it. Five robots all with wacky personalities join together to form one big robot piloted by a preteen as the last line of defence against evil in the entire universe.

Danger Mouse did show in the states at one point--that was great. I'm now reminded of Bakshi's "Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures," another great one.

And Inspector Gadget was very good too--thanks especially to Don Adams, which of course brings us to "Get Smart," yet another fantabulous show of my youth. Can't bring myself to see the movie because, fine as Carell is, he's not Adams, and I don't want to see anyone else play Maxwell Smart.

Inspector gadget was wonderful. I will never go back and watch that series, because I enjoyed it too much as a kid and I don't want to ruin that memory.

Reading Rainbow rocked my world, having Jordi LaForge tell me to read was all i needed. when i was in high school a local punk band covered the theme song.

  • JanellJanell July 2008

I lived for the Disney Shows... and Are You Afraid Of The Dark (which my sister found all the episodes on DVD and got me for christmas), Alex Mack, Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts and a show called Breaker High that NO ONE knows about...

those shows made my childhood fantastic...

My nephew now watches Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales, and Talespin b/c my sister got them on DVD for him so he could be as cultured as we were growing up haha

  • 15step15step July 2008

As a kid I watched anything on Nickelodeon: Pete and Pete, All That, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, Rugrats, and Kenan and Kel. And who could forget Salute Your Shorts and Clarissa Explains it All?
I was also HUGELY into TMNT and Batman: The Animated Series.

  • FerrosFerros July 2008

If it's already been mentioned i apologise but Saved by the bell was just the quintessential pre-teen, early teen years show. Zak and Slater having the worst school yard fight i've ever seen, the girl from showgirls before she was a dirty tramp and who can forget Screech and Principal Belding, the greatest comedy team since Abbott and Costello.

  • RerunRerun July 2008

Are you afraid of the dark was fantastic, it actually scared me...

I loved Alex Mack! It was only a few years ago, but I realized that, as a kid, I really wanted to have sex with her. Hey Dude was awesome, and Salute Your Shorts was a mainstay of my child hood. Pete & Pete is one of the best shows ever! I also remember watching Wild and Crazy Kids! a lot. Also, "Who loves orange soda? KEL LOVES ORANGE SODA! I do, I do, I doo-ooo!"

Has anyone else heard the punk band 'The Dickies' cover of banana splits?

  • joeljoel July 2008

Speaking of Legends of the hidden temple, who else watched "Finders Keepers," a show on Nick where you had to destroy a mock house full of crap to find certain items?

I also LOVED Nick Arcade. I was all "How do they put them IN the video games?!?!?!? HOW!?"

I absolutely loved Rugrats, watched a lot of the Spielberg shows when they came over to the U.K. (mostly Freakazoid and Pinky and the Brain), B:TAS, Doug, TMHT, Blue Peter, SMART, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Wacky Races, Pokemon, Digimon, Smurfs, Spiderman, the god awful Incredible Hulk (which had a strangely redeeming intro though the only word said in it was "HULK") and x-men. Think that just about covers it, though there was this one King Arthur related animated show that used to air in the morning on CBBC, sometime during the late 90's I think, that i'm hoping some other Brits could possibly remember.

  • SeanSean August 2008

Posted By: his holiness though there was this one King Arthur related animated show

We had one here that I **think** was called "Knights Of The Round". Somehow a football player gets teleported and becomes King Arthur. Could that have been it?

King Arthur and the Knights of Justice. That had to be my top guilty pleasure of Saturday morning cartoons.

  • his+holinesshis holiness August 2008

I don't think it was the football player one it was way too serious for that storyline though as an idea that does sound pretty awesome though, also I forgot to mention Animals of Farthing Wood.

    Yes! Great show!

Being a Brit born in the seventies I watched some shit that would blow your mind, including but not limited to -

    Bagpuss
    The flumps
    Bod
    Danger Mouse
    The Trapdoor
and of course the greatest show of all time knightmare

  • SeanSean August 2008

Danger Mouse was great - I actually bought Season 1 from Best Buy and it holds up fairly well. Knightmare looks outstanding! See above for the American attempt at bluescreen/VR gameshows - "Nick Arcade". Not even close.

  • MonkeyBearMonkeyBear August 2008

My childhood shows consisted of Barney in the toddler years, which may be why I'm so warped now.

I also watched Buffy as a child with my dad. Watched Hey Arnold and The Weekenders.

Now I watch Disney shows and Joss Whedon's stuff, and since I'm still sort of a child, I guess that counts?

  • his+holinesshis holiness August 2008

Trapdoor was good but scared the hell out of me with its general freakiness.
