  • I know the forum hasn't even officially been launched yet, but why isn't there a BSG thread?

    Now there is.

Was anyone else pissed that BSG didn't air this past friday? I didn't realize it wasn't going to air and started freaking out. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!!

  • FlankedFlanked May 2008

I had to remember that it wasn't on this week. And then I realized I didn't care that much because this current season seems totally lackluster compared to the previous three.

  • joeljoel May 2008

One can only hope they are winding down in preparation for an onslaught of ass kickery for the 2nd half of the season.

Starting with the miniseries is the only way to go. And, YES, it is absolutely worth it. Despite some complaints for this season it's still the best show on TV by a long shot.

Starting with the mini-series is definitely preferable, but I watched most of Season 1 before I caught the mini-series (some torrents are faster than others) and was still completely entertained having not experienced all of it.

I'll say that I haven't yet been as excited by the show as I was by the first episode (39 Minutes I think it was called) of season 1. I'd like to be that entertained once more.

Alrighty, mini-series first it is then! Is it similar to Stargate SG-1, because yet another friend is trying to get me into that show, and so far I'm kinda meh on it.

I liked Stargate, but I could never get that into it. I think it's because the action always felt very small-scale and repressed. I think the series kind of limited itself in its presentation.

  • joeljoel May 2008

From my limited experience with SG-1 I would say the ONLY thing they have in common is outer space. The similarities end there.

I never really watched a lot of SG1 but they never actually went into space, just from planet to planet

They dropped that premise after a while and got a ship from what I understand.

It's actually called "33" and I agree that was one of the best episodes.

I am actually really enjoying season 4, there are definitely some low points, but there have been enough "What the FUCK?!" moments as i like to call them to keep it exciting. The most recent episode was especially good for that.

  • FlankedFlanked May 2008

Posted By: Greg2point0...but there have been enough "What the FUCK?!" moments as i like to call them to keep it exciting...

Ahem, that's "What the FRAK?!" in proper BSG-lish.

  • The creep-out factor can get pretty high too. In a good way. This past episode (S4E07) having Gaeta sing that creepy song the whole episode tied everything together and gave a cool vibe to it. I'm also a major fan of the white board in the President's office. It shows the current human count. It also matches with the count in the opening credits and updates every episode. After Cally got spaced, it ticked down by one.

Third season drags a bit, but all in all, it's a great show. If you just want to cheat, sci-fi.com posted up a 8 minute recap of the first three seasons here.

  • Alrighty, mini-series first it is then! Is it similar to Stargate SG-1, because yet another friend is trying to get me into that show, and so far I'm kinda meh on it.

Well, I happen to thoroughly enjoy both BSG and SG-1, so take this with a grain of your ionically-bonded compound of choice, but...

BSG is nothing at all like SG-1. They are completely different in premise, tone, and production. SG-1 has science fiction as its premise (i.e., "What would happen if you could step through a gate and be on a different planet?"). The plot lines, as a result, follow pretty standard sci-fi themes. BSG, on the other hand, has sci-fi as its setting. That is to say, while there are number of science fiction concepts in the show, they aren't really given a lot of treatment. The core of the show is about the human condition (i.e., "What if you couldn't trust that anyone you knew was actually who they said they were?"). It gives very deep treatment to concepts like trust and faith. It is a very strong commentary on us as a species, and they can get away with such a harsh depiction because it's not really about us but imaginary situations from which we can pretend to be distant. That's what makes it the best show on television.

Ok, then it sounds much more like my cup of tea than SG-1. I'll definitely give it a shot. Thanks!

I think a majority of BSG fans would kill Ron Moore if he did that. It's not that I don't mind Gaeta, I actually liked him until he started singing, he's just doesn't seem like an important enough character to be the final one. If he would have been in the initial four... maybe.

Zack was one of my guesses from a previous HE Podcast. I think they've been throwing his name around for so long that he has to play a bigger roll than "dead son/dead lover."

But you would think Bill would know if he'd fathered a Cylon. D's parents are dead and she's from a shitty planet so no one can confirm or deny her humanity.

  • FerrosFerros May 2008

Honestly the way season 4 is going any ones guess on who the final Cylon is would be valid. The only people I don't suspect at this point are Gaius and Starbuck because they've been accused so many times it would be a cop out to name either of them as the fifth. Hell i think Anders and Tory were weak "No idea what to do with these characters, bam they're cylons now." choices for two of the final five. To many arguments can be made for to many characters and with all the rumours of the writers doing major rewrites for the final half of the season who the hell knows.

  • mSeligamSeliga May 2008

I just read that Sky ran this weeks episode already. What the Frak! Time to go to mininova.

  • Wow I never thought about Zack being the final cylon, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. And if you've read any of the BSG comics you might remember a certain storyline concerning Zack and the old model centurians (not going to say anything else about this so I don't reveal any spoilers that may occur).

  • DemiakumuDemiakumu May 2008

whoever they make the final Cylon out to be somebody will end up disappointed...and excited, and likely implode.

  • FlankedFlanked May 2008

I wouldn't appreciate Zach being the final cylon this late in the series. If Zach had been an actual character for the life of the show, sure. But to add him in at this late point would feel very deus ex machina.

  • ArcysArcys May 2008

Agreed. That goes for any of the other incidental characters that have come up in discussions, such as Admiral Cain or Kendra Shaw (from Razor). It just has to be someone we've been following all along.

I disagree. I think it can't be one of the big players because each of them has been suspected of being a Cylon (if not by the crew then overwhelmingly by the fans). There's also that Last Supper picture that was shown in Entertainment Weekly and during EVERY frakkin commerical break on Sci-Fi. I suppose it could be considered a spoiler so I won't go into details, but it does put several theories to rest for good if you're interested. FWIW my money's still on Gaeta, although they've been featuring him a lot lately which now makes me think he's a red herring.

Well look at who the Known Four are and their positions. Col. Tigh is the XO of Galactica (this is not knowing what's going to happen as BSG hasn't aired here yet), Torri is Aide to Roslin, Anders is a Viper pilot, and Tyrol was Deck Chief. All four are/were in important positions thru-out the fleet. Gaeta doesn't do jack schitt compared to the final four.

But if Ron Moore picks Gaeta I will accept it, because he hasn't lead me astray yet!

"This is the earth. And this is Pinky. You can tell the difference quite easily. One is a lump of inert matter hurtling blindly through the void. The other... is the earth." -The Brain
  • Tigh and Tyrol I'll give you, but Gaeta's contribution has been at least as significant as Tory's and much more significant than Anders. Anders is a new Viper pilot, and not a very good one at that. His contribution has been minimal at best since he led the resistance on the original Caprica.

Gaeta was Baltar's aide when he was president - and I think he even helped Baltar with his "Cylon detector". He wrote a firewall that would block the Cylons when they networked the computers. He was also the first one not to get thrown out of the airlock during the little Inquisition after New Caprica. As far as his position, he's Senior Officer of the Watch or somesuch - he's basically in charge of the command center of the Galactica when Adama and Tigh aren't present if I understand correctly. Seems pretty significant to me. I won't deny, though, that Gaeta always seems to be in the background. Until recently (I haven't seen this week's episode either) he's never really been there except to help other people, and he always ends up overshadowed by the bigger characters. That could be a point for or against him being a Cylon, really.

I mean, I won't defend this one to the death. I think there are plenty of plausible theories. I just happen to like mine at the moment - but we can discuss that more over in the other discussion on the final Cylon.

  • TankobiteTankobite May 2008

I don't really understand Tigh; isn't he too old to be a cylon, I mean he fought with Adama in the war...that would seem a little too early for the cylons to be having the human models. Another thing; didn't the cylons say they couldn't procrate amongst themselves?

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
so then how did Tigh get that six pregnant?

I haven't seen the last episode since I've been working until midnight last two days and don't own a dvr of any sort. I also refuse to watch the crap quality on SciFi's site.

I just have one question; is this episode just another step in the show's downward spiral, or was it actually worth a damn?

I'll be catching it on Monday or Tuesday when I go to my friend-with-a-DVR's place, but I must know if I will be disappointed.

I thought it was pretty good overall. They drag out some stuff with Lee, but I think in the end, it's worth it just to get a sense of where everyone is emotionally at this point.

  • FerrosFerros June 2008

I miss the action, i really do. You used to be able to get a fix of Viper on Raider action pretty regularly but all the visions and mystical stuff is murking up the waters of an already intricate show. It's the final season, we don't need more exposition we need answers and explosions.

You know why Hub (episode 9) was so awesome, best of the fourth series so far in my opinion. It was written by a former Buffy writer, Jane Espenson. I don't know what episodes of Buffy she wrote but all the dark humour makes sense now.

The part where Baltar starts spouting his feel-good nonsense at the hybrid and convinces himself that he's some sort of master psychologist - only to have the hybrid "JUMP!" a moment later? Just fantastic. That's not just good writing, that's great directing; the timing was spot on.
