Penny-Arcade's On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One
  • Has anyone else tried this hilarious new game?
I've downloaded the demo - buying it after school's out, still got finals - and it's pretty fun!

  • played it through to the end on release day...it was that gripping, loved every minute of it

  • DramDram May 2008

I've played the demo, and I really liked both the gameplay and, chiefly, its fantastic writing. I love how you can throw fruit so that the FFs get horny and have sex with it instead of attacking you.

  • joeljoel May 2008

I probably wont get a chance to play it, not having an Xbox and not being a huge fan of turn based games, but I LOVE that Jerry and Mike from PA got a chance to create the very thing they've been commenting on for 10 years.

It's like they came full cirlce from gamers, to game reviewers, to game satirists and finally to game creators. That would be like me getting to show-run a Whedon series, or have a cartoon on Adult Swim.

I wish them all the success and hope the PA Adventures series does incredibly well for them.

The game's also available for download on PC, Mac and Linux, whichever your flavor.

It ought to win the Intertubes. It's on my purchase list after a GSYFB shirt.

It is winning, according to Krahulik.

On an unrelated note, Welcome to your forum, oh mighty moderator!

That's a pretty imposing "mod" banner there. It makes me scared to post on the same thread as you. I hope you rule with a firm but fair hand.

That's it. I've had enough of you snarking up this forum. Banhammer on user "joel".

Your parents give you big red warning banners?

PA:OTRSPoD E1 (what a terrible acronym) is a fun game. If you like Penny Arcade, you'll like the game. Period. The right humor, art and creative sprinkling of swear words makes the world completely hook me. I mean, where else would the official description of a baddie be "This guy is a sinister as fuck?"

  • WadmaasiWadmaasi May 2008

I didn't expect the actual gameplay to be as fun as I ended up having with it. The story/setting/dialog/etc. were exactly what I wanted out of it. What I've found even more fascinating, though, is all the explanatory stuff that Gabe and Tycho have posted. The uStream (or whatever) that Gabe has up on their front page the last couple days where he shows off the concept art and answered questions people were typing when he was showing it live is awesome. I can never get enough of other peoples' creative process.

You do realize how easy that is right?

    Trying to watch it downstairs.

    Hooray, thread-jacks.

Only not so much. *wields firm-but-fair hand*

It's worth giving the demo a spin just to see what you look like in the PArcadeiverse with the custom character builder.

  • mSeligamSeliga May 2008

I tried the demo on the PC and it was pretty good. For some reason though it seemed to lag a bit, even though my computer is low-high range.

  • SeanSean May 2008

I bought it from XBL without even playing the demo, just to support a brand I believe in (and yes, before you ask, I do have a GSYFB shirt and am ordering the FB v2.0 one). The humor and style is there 100% as far as the story goes, but as for the actual gameplay, I'm finding the 'recharge' system is a little off-putting. You have to wait to input orders, but it's easy to miss seeing that one is ready to be used. Now, I am also playing this on a 36 inch standard-def TV, and I'm only an hour into it. That's just my initial reaction to the game so far.

  • MikesterMikester May 2008

I'm liking Rainslick so far, it's littered with little digs at gaming in general. T. Kempers "Grooming (or dooming)" attack is a brilliant touch, I like the idea of RPG-style summons that turn out to be utterly useless at the worst possible moment.

The only real criticism of the game I have is that the Character Creation is a little flat. I kind of expected more choices, but that's not really a biggie for me.

  • RerunRerun June 2008

It's probably the only arcade game I've actually enjoyed thoroughly, when will we get to see a HE game?

I heard someone discussing how the creation options for women were lackluster compared to the options for men. Unfortunately, developers seem to follow the 90/10 guideline, thereby ignoring the minority of female gamers.

I was able to create myself quite easily. But as an overweight shaved head white guy, I'm not exactly difficult to create.

I thought the achievements on the XBL version were amusing. I guess if you're awesome at the reversal system, you should never take damage. I'm not good at it though, so the Immortal (never die) and Silent But Deadly (never heal vs. boss) achivements are going to have to remain unatainable for me. I don't have Nine Lives (killing an enemy with T. Kemper's grooming attack), Pacifist (win a battle without any offensive attacks), or Fight 'Em With Items, but all three seem easy enough early in the game.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady August 2008

I'm pretty sure I actually got T. Kemper's doom attack when playing through, but I was busy setting up other attacks so I wasn't paying attention until suddenly everyone was dead. Go figure.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
Did anyone else think the Mime Pope fight took FOREVER. In retrospect I could've played it a little more intelligently but I just couldn't figure out how to dodge his weakening attack, so it took an eternity to wear him down. I was very annoyed.

But considering those poor bastards that tried for 18 hours to take out that boss in Final Fantasy XI, I guess I can't complain.

  • FerrosFerros August 2008

@Mike Brady I heard about that 18 hour FF XI battle, do you have a link to an article about it? I'd love to know more about such a completely insane event.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady August 2008

I think this is the original article, although there are blurbs in several other places.
