I recently nabbed my ass a Nintendo DS, as well as a used copy of FF3, and I have been hooked.

Any suggestions on games I should spend money on (instead of, you know, food)?

Also, I'm having problems connecting to my home network. It's telling me the WEP code isn't right, when I know for a fact it is. Help?

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady July 2008

Puzzle Quest, Puzzle Quest, Puzzle Quest. I'm not usually one for match-3 games, but this one is tons of fun. Civilzation Revolutions is also a strong recommendation!

Can't help you with the wi-fi issues though. We've used WEP with no issues.

  • SeanSean July 2008

I'll second the Puzzle Quest recommendation. I've only played in on XBL, but I'm assuming it's the same thing, but would probably be better on the DS for shorter play sessions.

I've always been a Zelda fan, so Phantom Hourglass is my second choice. Rent Warioware Touched as well. It's insanely fun, but once you beat it, that's pretty much all there is to it.

Professor Layton and The Curious Village, pure mind bending puzzle awesome and The World Ends With You published by Square Enix so you know it's good.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady July 2008

^^^ Good recommendations by Ferros. I concur.

  • NEw Super Mario Bros is amazing, Geometry Wars Galaxies is a really cool arcade style game, Phantom Hourglass is also very rad, as is Mario Kart.

Honestly I think I enjoy playing DS more than any console.

  • Advance Wars, either of them (Dual Strike or Days of Ruin). Turn-based strategy game with colorful tanks, jeeps and planes. Super addictive.

My mom has New Super Mario Bros., I played about five minutes of it and really liked it. I might have to pick that up.

My wife has a game called Clubhouse Games, it has a shit-ton of card games, board games and mini-games. We usually play a few rounds of Hearts or Rummy before bed.

Anything in the Final Fantasy Tactics stable of games is awesome sweet turn based strategy if you like your swords and sorcery.

Trauma Centre has got to be my favourite game on the DS, when Chrono Trigger is re-released at the end of the year I'm going to hide in a cupboard and play it out for a week...

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady July 2008

    Mmmmm... Chrono Trigger....

Yeah...I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there...
I gave it a very fair amount of time (about 4 hours or so) before deciding, but the controls ruined it for me. I liked the concept of the dual-screen semi-co-op attacks, and the main character amused me. If you're into the micro-management thing, then the fashion system will appeal to you too (not my thing, but that's more a matter of taste, so no points off for that). My issue was that it never seemed to attack or move when and where I wanted it to. Powers got mixed up, etc. Basically, any stylus movement that needed interpretation by the game (moving vs slashing, tapping vs click/drag) was very unreliable. Again, the idea was great, the characters and story held my interest, but the control issues were just too much for me to get past.

New Super Mario Bros is 2nd in the series ONLY to Super Mario Bros 3. That game is a fantastic platformer and makes me pine for more 2D sidescrollers.

I also liked Tetris (wifi play is excellent), and Meteos. I had Kirby for a while but after the novelty wore off I kind of hated it.

FF4 remake comes next week, you should definitely grab that
Ill 2nd the world ends with you, its fantastic
If you were a fan of the old first person wizardry rougelikes type games look at Etrian Odyssey 2, its great if you are looking for a hardcore, difficult rpg

  • EddieEddie July 2008

I picked up Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and I have to say, it's possibly the best investment I could have made. I think I clocked in something around five hours of gaming yesterday. It's pretty sick.

  • joeljoel July 2008

I just read an article that said "Tetris DS" has been out of production for a while and is now a collectors item selling for more than $60 on eBay. WTF Nintendo? Why stop making this fantastic multiplayer game?

Didn't you hear? Nintendo hates the "hardcore" gamer. Unless Tetris has pastels, Miis and motion controls, I wouldn't expect to see it on a Nintendo system again soon.

I would say pick up Elite Beat Agents which I absolutely love but I hate almost all of the music in the version released in the UK. So my vote would have to go with Trauma Centre, although on top of the chrono trigger rerelease there is also the ff4 rerelease which obviously isn't quite as cool as trigger but is pretty awesome. Didn't know that they'd stopped production of Tetris though that totally blows.

I really enjoyed orcs and elves I love old school 2D dungeon crawling and of course if you invest in the right kit you can play monkey island, etc.

I absolutley agree on this one. Try and nab yourself a version of the US version of EBA. I'm absolutley addicted and I totally recommend.

The be all and end all of DS gaming has been announced, Chrono Trigger. The only game i've finished more times than Chrono Trigger would be Sonic 2, this became an immediate must buy upon announcement. It's just great i can't recommend it highly enough, hell i've been playing it again just because of this announcement.

  • FlankedFlanked August 2008

Good thread. Just added Puzzle Quest, Elite Beat Agents, Geometry Wars, and Zelda Phantom Hourglass to my Goozex queue.

I just yesterday found out that EIDOS is making "Gauntlet DS"

    Gamespot link

My brothers and I used to stay up all night playing that back in the '80s and I play it with my son every once in a while on Xbox Live, but I'll definitely be buying that one whenever it comes out.

  • FlankedFlanked August 2008

Elite Beat Agents and Geometry Wars: Galaxies are on their way!

Does Geometry Wars have leaderboards or friend's scores incorporated in any way? It'd fun to have a Fancy Bastard DS competition leaderboard.

Yep, possibly the best game ever. I'm so glad that they're giving younger people the possibility of the experience that is Chrono Trigger...

    Agreed.

I just read an article where Sega admits that they've really dropped the bomb in the past couple years with the new Sonic games (just a couple years, try ever since Sonic and Knuckles). Instead of trying to come up with crazy new ideas like the Sonic games for Wii and Sonic Snowboarding or whatever that piece of shit was called they should take a hint from Mario and make a classic sidescroller. I would much rather play another classic version that reminds me of Sonic 2 than some crazy piece of shit where I have to wave my arms around like a jackass just to make Sonic run.

With the momentum behind "reimagined" titles like Pac-Man CE, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Space Invaders Extreme etc., I hope some of the classic IP holders see where the money is and support that direction. The thing to keep in mind is that these new/old games are getting great reviews, and I'm not so sure Sega is up to the task of creating a good game, especially out of what they've done to the Sonic franchise.

  • AaronAaron August 2008

Both Castlevania games are amazing. New Super Mario Bros. is a regular mainstay in my DS. Yoshi's Island DS is pretty great if you can get past the dead zone frustration. The FF remakes and FF Tactics are good choices.

  • FlankedFlanked September 2008

Okay, staying true to my word, I'm now playing through (albeit quite slowly and in spurts):

    Geometry Wars: Galaxies

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords

    and Elite Beat Agents

So far, all the games are pretty fun for the first hour or so. That's about as far as I ever get into portable games, but I'm hoping to correct that and actually finish these. It'll take a while, but I'll keep it going.

  • EddieEddie September 2008

I'm going to warn you all now against buying Civilization for the DS. What's wrong with it?

Nothing (sans a few tiny details, but they don't really detract from gameplay).

Which is why you shouldn't buy it. It gets its grubby little world conquest fingers into you and doesn't let go. Every time I have five seconds where my hands aren't doing anything, I reach for that game. I dunno, maybe it's me; my family has a history of addiction to the Civ games (my mother had to physically take my father's copy of Civ3 away from him). Regardless, I suggest you approach this title with extreme caution.

Step 1 is admitting you have a problem.

Step 2 is reverting to a previous save to adequately prepare for the barbarian invasion at the 12 hour mark.

Unless you're the Mongols, and then defeating their villages lead to new cities. Then barbs are awesome.
