Saw it this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, I am a massive Batman geek so i'm pretty biased here. Fuck Jack Nicholson, this is the Joker you need to see. No wacky pranks, just a sociopath with a flair for the twisted. Gary Oldman is Gary Oldman and just excellent with what he's given to do, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman perform admirably. Christian Bale is an excellent Batman but i'm still not happy with the portrayl of Bruce Wayne/Batman from a character stand point. There are a few moments that just don't ring true for me personally from an established and expected behaviour stand point. The action scenes are all top notch, especially a chase scene in the middle. With the Harvey Dent reveal being just superb, big thumbs up for Aaron Eeckhart on his job as well. All in all, loved it and will definitely be going to see it again.
Yeah, the Joker has always been one of the most twisted sociopaths ever written, toleration of previous 'funny' jokers was pretty unbearable for me. I called the whole media storm on HL's; performance 'His best performance yet" etc... I even caught some reporter stating that he may be chosen to receive an Oscar...
I really enjoyed Ledger's work, i've never seen Brokeback Mountain so i can't compare the two but he was excellent in this. Oscar talk is a bit over the top, i just hope that it's not a sympathy nomination. If he deserves it give it to him, if there are better performances then they deserve it more. There were alot of neat quirks and things Ledger did with it to make it really snap on screen and i'll be able to pay more attention to his performance when i see it again and i'm not overwhelmed by the spectacle.
Haven't seen it yet, but I truly hope that Heath Ledger is mind-blowing fantastic for one simple reason - he is *going* to win the Oscar this year, no matter what his performance was. Like Ferros said, I hope it's not just sympathy. That would make his name a bit of a punchline down the road.

I went to a midnight screening and it was completely amazing. The Joker sort of reminded me of Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. A totally dark, nihilistic character who is unhinged from the first moment he appears on-screen. I loved how all the minor characters had as much importance as Batman. Everything worked really well. I think this blows the previous Batman films out of the water when it comes to writing.

I'll be on vacation this week, but where I'm going (Wildwood, NJ) they have a "movies on the beach" every night, and Dark Knight is this week's feature. I may see it a second time in an actual theater just to get the full effect of proper lighting and sound. It's a sacrifice I'll just have to make...
Posted By: jacob666did anyone else think that "joker's theme" sounded like something from godspeed! you black emperor?songs to sleep to
ok, i'm gona say my bit, it was good, but i didn't think it was as good as all the hype made out it was going to be. i
think what made batman begins so amazing was that it had nearly all of its plot being different from the tim burton batman films, until of course they changed who the joker was... but i thought a lot of dark knight just seemed like regurgitated, jumbled-up version of the tim burton films.
ALSO, heath ledger seemed to be the only one with funny, one-liners, more should have been given to bale and caine etc coz it was so emo i actually wanted to slash my wrists at the end of it. i suppose tho, that if they're makin a trilogy (which i'm guessin they are, i don't know) its followin in the star wars route of ending the 2nd film on a downer. hmmmm. this is really jus train of thought haha.
wow, i did paragraphs and EVERYTHING! :D
i'd still get with batman if i had the chance though, what a legend...

i don't think that christopher nolan is following the story arc of star wars so much as he's following how story arc work in general. from the screen writing books that i've glanced at the main character is supposed to be at his lowest at the end of act two, just like in tootsie. seriously, that was the work cited in both books.
hmmm yeh, wel its true. it jus made me think of the bit in clerks, thats the only reason i likened it to star wars. i suppose the hero has to hav a fall before he can triumph. even though he's an anti-hero.

lol not because of the contracted workers ALTHOUGH:
Spoilers (highlight to read)
lots of policemen died because bruce failed to see that the joker would switch the locations of rachel and dent. sort of.
@ SuperKatie
Spoilers (highlight to read)
I was under the impression that Batman CHOSE to go after Dent instead of Rachel... Maybe there's something I missed?
i haven't read the comics. sadly my friends would disown me if i actually went out and bought comics, so i just stick to those on t'internet.
i was talking about batman with one of my friends 2day and said 'i still prefer the tim burton ones, coz i love the colours and music and cheesy-ness' and she said 'who's tim burton?' i nearly had a heart attack right there in clintons!
ALSO, did anyone watch mock the week last night?
scenes we'd like to see: unlikely lines to hear in a superhero movie.
"what's that joker? you'll be back? somehow i don't think so."
and i'm going to see frankie boyle in november :D

Lame! Who needs friends who suppress your full geek potential?!Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.
thanks :D lol
i've only just revealed to my uni friends that i read fanfics, duno how they'd react if i told them i'v written them and that 2 of them are 50,000 words+ :S
anyways, dark knight rules. poor bruce though.

I present, the Geek Hierarchy v. 2.0. For myself, I only fall as far as Tier 4 (Roleplayers, Trekkies). Any further and I'd want an intervention.
before i left for tour my roommates and i snuck into the dark knight three times in two days, i dig this movie.
@ rerun - what if he had a bunch of snazzy one liners in the movie? it would have felt so surreal hearing batman saying things like, "hope you've got insurance" during the bat pod scene?
@flanked, wow that flow chart is amazing! sadly, i get as far as fanfic writers who put themselves in the story. but i still consider myself to be less geeky than trekkies :P

@ Flanked-I only get as far as Sci-fi TV fan. I think there are a few missing links in that chart though. No comic collectors, or people who build shrines to their favorite geek shows, like...no one I know. *blush*
I got to see it this week under less than optimal conditions, which would consist of a gigantic blow-up screen on the beach (insert blow-up related comment here). A lot of fun to experience, but not the best way to judge the quality of the actual movie. I'll be seeing it in IMAX within the next few weeks, but until then, here is my opinion:
I think that it was a very satisfying movie. It felt longer than expected ("That's what SHE said!") and had a couple of what felt like, as best as I can describe them, "false finishes". As for the Joker character, I went into it fully expecting to be disappointed by an over-hyped Heath Ledger performance. I am very happy to say that it ended up not being the case at all. I don't know if it could be termed "an Oscar-worthy performance", but the character was very faithful to my memories of Batman comics in the early to mid 80s. Whether that can be attributed to the writing, the acting or both, I don't really know. All I know is that it felt like I was watching the comic book Joker on the screen.
Now I just need to see it in IMAX. Note to self: bring a change of underpants.
