HD trailer
All my fears have been assuaged. The only thing that could make this better is if Alan Moore had a hand in the film.
I am slightly disappointed that they revealed as much about Dr. Manhattan's origin in the trailer as they did, though I can see how it calmed my nerd fears of an inaccurate scene. I also wanted Rorschach's voice to be a little more gravely, but that's a minor quibble. The 300-esque film style I feel is perfect for this film and the original comic's art style.
I just peed in my pants a little.
Watching the Watchmen trailer was like having my eyes felated.
Thank you.
Posted By: Jonny Acefraking fantastic, and me being a retarded Smashing Pumpkins freak having their song in it just made me ruin my pants that much moreMal: Well look at this..appears we got her just in the nick of time what does that make us? Zoe: Big Damn Heroes! Mal: Ain't we just.
I just watched the trailer, since I didn't want anything spoiled before finishing the book. I'm pretty confident they can translate the look of the comic, seeing the successes of Sin City, 300, 30 Days of Night, and V For Vendetta...but with so much symbolism and things buried in the background, it seems a like a pretty overwhelming task to truly pull it off. The pirate comic book, for example, was on the surface no more than an amusing plot device, but when taken with the entire story arc, it becomes such an integral part of the story. I have a feeling things like that will just be taken out, leaving the central story and nothing more.
Oh, and because people discussing the movie have most likely read the novel, I have a question...

Where did the shadow come from? It wasn't during the blast, since the positioning was wrong, and the figures are clearly male and female. For something that appeared so often, I can't put together the "real" meaning of it.

Chapter 5, page 11, center of the page, I believe this is the first time you see the silhouette you're talking about. Then a few panels further you watch a gang of punkers tag another wall with the same image. I link it to when Viedt is talking about how as society races toward war, sexual undertones and marketing become more popular, so I think this may be another representation of that. Also, back on that first page, you see that panel framed by Rorschach confronted by his landlady, who he later confronts about being ... so much like his mother, and on the other side, Laurie and Dan leaving the restaurant not yet "together" but they become closer as the world moves ever closer to the precipice.
Posted By: FlankedPart of this is what I think is presented on a base level, and part is my own interpretation of the story and themes as an overall narrative. This book is so finely tuned and crafted ... as cool as the trailer looks, there's just not any way I can think of a feature-length movie matching up. I don't doubt the movie will be good and effectively get the gist across, but Watchmen for me is about everything coming together, much like two lovers on the edge of oblivion.
Posted By: EddieThere's no way it can completely translate over to film, but I have faith that this will still be 99% better than any other comics-based movie out there.

There, now that I'm in a spoiler box I can speak freely. I think the movie will be good, yes, because good people are making it. I don't think the story will translate perfectly, and will need a lot of alteration to work as a script. The issue isn't the amount of material, or even the level of detail; I think the issue will be that the plot is so nontraditional for a movie. I mean, the bad guy winning in the end and most of the protaganists just kind of rolling over? That's almost impossible to put into film without making it crap. They'll still have to do it, of course, they have to have some semblance of the original ending after all, but they'll have to do it very differently.
Posted By: SeanNon-spoliery comment - just because the original work is a classic doesn't mean they will have the same ending...or even anything remotely close. Exhibit A: I Am Legend.I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy

Posted By: Not MandatoryOh god, you HAD to bring that up didn't you?! *Shakes fist at the film completely missing the point of the story*Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

Anyway, as Dram noted, this book doesn't translate into a traditional film at all. In fact, the plot may hurt the box-office takings. People will come to see it expecting the average superhero fare and be sadly disappointed at the lack of 'asplosions'. But who knows, maybe it could swing the other way? I think the "Black Freighter" scenes will be omitted as background chit-chat because they can't put them in without ruining the continuity. The sad thing is that the people who come in having read the novel will be the only informed ones in the audience, having read the 'case files' at the end of each chapter and having seen the "Black Freighter" parts and all of the background imagery which is present in Watchmen. Then, the people who come in not having read the book and expecting the average superhero movie will be disappointed and most-likely condemn it. Watchmen takes the phrase 'costume drama' in a literal sense and is basically a film for the fans in my opinion...
Posted By: EddieOn the note of the Black Freighter, it's being done as an animated feature that's being released on DVD after Watchmen hits theatres. I'll wait until the DVD with both of 'em comes out.MY NAME IS EDDIE ANDTHISIS MY STUFF
@Rerun
I agree with some of your perspective, but my mind is still not made up as to how the public at large will react to this story as it has been adapted for the screen.
I think it is a notable difference to label this story, as you said, a 'costume drama' rather than a superhero flick. These characters are not the paragons that are Superman or Batman. They are deeply flawed, and they only resemble superheroes in that they also wear garish costumes and sometimes have above average abilities.
Will the public be able to comprehend that difference? I believe the marketing so far has been different enough to question what the nature of the film is. Even if it fails in that sense, there are still the scenes in the story that have the 'fighting porn' of standard superhero stories, so that base expectation is met. It's a very similar situation to another of Alan Moore's adapted works in that way; V for Vendetta. Action porn? Check. Weird Alan Moore socio-political commentary? Check. I'd also like to think Fight Club is somewhat in this category of defying genre expectations and still delivering an excellent narrative. It's merely secondhand knowledge, but I believe Fight Club tanked in theaters, but it's DVD sales and international showings have more than made up for it's losses at the box office.
Or maybe I just have too much faith in the tastes of my fellow man. Time will tell.
