I'm launching a site and well, after seeing all the problems HE had with hosting I would like to ask everybody here for advice on this decision.
The site is a project I've been working on for most of the year, not the average out-of-the-box vBulletin forum. It has a lot of new functions, and it would be a shame if it was constantly going from online to offline just because the host is a piece of crap.
I was considering MediaTemple since I heard joel say it was good, but recently I've heard lots of complaints about them, while others told me about HostGator, which BTW has a nice score. But then again so does bluehost, and we all know how they are.
So, is HostGator OK? is there an even better hosting out there?
Theres no such thing and problem free hosting. That said, if you arent expecting tonnes of traffic, front page Digg's, etc go with DreamHost. For $10/mo shared hosting they get the best reviews. Ive had at least 1 dozen readers recommend them personally. NO SHARE HOST can handle high traffic or high CPU/RAM demands. They just arent built for it. The gripes you hear about Media Temple are about their so called "Grid" service. Its their version of distributed computing. Its was supposed to be traffic/Digg proof but fell WAY short of estimated performance.
Normal site/normal traffic = go with Dreamhost.
Otherwise get a dedicated box from The Planet, or a Dedicated Virtual from Media Temple. Both of these options require you to have your own server admin.
Well the DV of MT has a fair price I think, but what you mean is that if the site goes down/gets hacked I'm on my own? no tech support or anything?
According to HostGator the only problem are MySQL connections, and their limit is about 25 at the same time (the rough equivalent of a forum/network with 300 active users). Since my site IS a news aggregator/forum (among other stuff) 300 users is too low.
What hosting are you using now joel?
Yes. With DV or actual dedicated you are totally on your own for everything. I luckily have a few server admin friends that keep an eye on it. Otherwise I wouldnt be able to use their service. They are leasing you space on a box and thats the end of the relationship.
