    Brainwashed By a Parasite

Seroiusly? Fungus?! Mind Control? Man continues to write science fiction, but nothing compares to what nature has been doing on it's own since... well forever.
The whole thing about the worms also creeps me the fuck out.

The first clip is from Blue Planet by the BBC, which, if you haven't bought it on DVD yet, you should. I sat amazed for hours watching it.

"This is the earth. And this is Pinky. You can tell the difference quite easily. One is a lump of inert matter hurtling blindly through the void. The other... is the earth." -The Brain

Yeah, that second clip's been around for a while. Creepy as hell, if those things find some way to access humans and do the same we'll see a new breed of suicidal zombie...

In our region of the mid-Atlantic there's a type of dinoflagellate (microscopic amoeba-like organism) called Pfiesteria that is believed to be responsible for amnesia following long exposure, and may also cause aphasia, alexia, and acalculia (inability to speak, read, and do math, respectively). I had a chance to work with one of the researchers that was studying the organism before they knew about the effects. She said their research was just getting worse and worse until finally she realized that she couldn't remember her own phone number any more. Pretty scary - the effects were fairly long-term but thankfully not permanent.

What's really creepy about that link is that there's really no reason that that sort of "mind control" couldn't happen to humans. The part where it bores into the head is a little unlikely, but it's not a stretch to say that a fungus could release a toxin that could seriously alter our brain chemistry and make us do some pretty crazy stuff.

Easy workaround: inhale the spores through your nose. They can infect the cells through the part of your skull that separates the nasal cavity from the brain, which has little holes in it to allow your olfactory receptor neurons through. From there it's easy access to your limbic system, which controls emotions and memory. What would be really fucked up/cool is if one of the symptoms of infection involves suddenly losing your sense of smell, or smelling weird strong odors for no reason, or other ways in which your nose could suddenly go haywire.
