So it's that time of year again already...
  • FerrosFerros September 2008

Barely a year ago now i remember shelling out an exorbitant amount of cash to get all the must play games of the season. Stuff like CoD4, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Orange Box and the like. Seems the publishers are starting the Christmas rush a little earlier this year. So it begins with Mercenaries 2, which i have to get because i loved the first one. Then there's roughly 5 or 6 games i consider must buys. Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2, Dead Space. Then all the games i might buy, 007: Quantum of Solace, Saints Row 2, Force Unleashed, Brothers in Arms (sorry gearbox, i know they sell but i'm so fucken over WW2 games). So it's looking like a $500 to $1000 dollar Christmas, thank christ i hate people and don't buy gifts. So FB's, what games are on your shopping lists this Christmas season, what big titles have i missed?

  • RerunRerun September 2008

Fallout 3, Fable 2 definitely. The rest are maybes. I'm really not that into games anymore so I've narrowed it down to those two because I know they'll deliver, I also need money so it makes things hard, especially with Aussie games retailing at $80+...

I'm more interested in a new laptop and my shiny new 3 grand bass-amp setup (too many adjectives?) right now...

  • Locke+Cole117Locke Cole117 September 2008

    My list is: 1) Stalker: Clear Sky (2 more days!) 2) Rock Band 2 3) Fallout 3 4) Fable 2 5) Left 4 Dead 6) TF2

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady September 2008

    For sure:

    1. Final Fantasy XIII
    2. Spore
    3. Rock Band 2
    4. LittleBigPlanet
    5. Mirror's Edge
    6. Penny Arcade Adventures 2
    7. Valkyria Chronicles

    Maybe:
    1. Force Unleashed
    2. Fallout 3
    3. Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess
    4. Bioshock
    5. Stargate Worlds
    6. Chrono Trigger DS

Unfortunately, I think my eyes are bigger than my wallet. This looks to be a very expensive list.

  • photozzphotozz September 2008

Currently playing Diablo II and MDK. BAH.. What are these new fangled games you kids are talking about. ..

I WILL be playing the Penny Arcade games as soon as I can pay for them. Great stuff.

Yeah I actually just started playing Command & Conquer: Red Alert again thanks to that free download. And I still play Civilization 4 all the freakin' time.

  • SeanSean September 2008

MDK was awesome! And I've been fiddling around with Eye Of The Beholder, but having some trouble getting it to run reliably on XP. One step forward, two steps back.

My "must buy" games are: Rock Band 2, Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, and Portal:Still Alive
    Probable - Force Unleashed
    Maybe - Mirror's Edge, BiA:HH

  • MuttonheadMuttonhead September 2008

Fable 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Mirrors Edge, Hells Highway, Valkyria Chronicles, Stalker Clear Sky, Chrono Trigger DS, Red Alert 3, Dragon Quest 4, Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, CoD World at War, Prince of Persia, Persona 4 - All on the watch list at least

Another expensive holiday season is here huzzah

  • kertapkertap September 2008

I usually don't play survival horror because they freak me out so much but I think I'm going to have to get Dead Space.

Will definitely get Fable 2 and Fallout 3 too.

  • MelkorMelkor September 2008

Fable 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Dead Space, and of course Spore
And with the KOTOR MMO in production, I really need to get a job...

  • AndyTheGeekyAndyTheGeeky September 2008

Fallout 3 Survival Edition - if I have the money.
    Dead Space
Mirror's Edge - preorder from GameStop for Faith's messenger bag!
    Renting GoW2
    Force Unleashed, certainly.
Anything from VALVe - Portal: Still Alive, Left 4 Dead.

And I'm waiting for Star Trek: Online, though I'd certainly try the KotOR MMO.

  • RerunRerun September 2008

My 360 got the infamous RROD last night, let's hope it's back before Fable. At least I have my PS3 to fall back on and (*shudder*) the Wii...

EDIT: Brothers in Arms video on GT - look who's talking at 2:22...

  • AndyTheGeekyAndyTheGeeky September 2008

    Interesting last name.
And WOAH. I wasn't even going to look at BiA:HH, but that's awesome.

  • FerrosFerros September 2008

Be honest Eli, how tempted were you to do your little bit in that video as Cloverfield? I'm still not sold on BIA:HH, just so completely over WW2. Even the next COD doesn't interest me in the slightest. I think COD4 broke me, 60 year old weapons vs. Airstrikes and Barrett .50 Cal sniper rifles. No contest.

    But you forgot Nazis.

  • FerrosFerros September 2008

I've shot more digital nazis than i care to count. Now i enjoy shooting digital terrorists.

  • RerunRerun September 2008

I wasn't interested in BiA at all either, but then I watched some of these videos. Damn, it looks awesome and I'm grabbing it, go the gore. Also, fuck CoD5...

  • lardboylardboy September 2008

My list back dated to the beginning of September (UK release dates) -

    5th Sept Mercenaries 2
    19th Sept The Force Unleashed
26th Sept BIA-HH < I wanna practice exploding peoples brain pans so I can use the game as defence at my trial.
    10th Oct Lego Batman
24th Oct Fable II - Collectors edition (preordered) < Taking a day off work for this one
24th Oct Little Big Planet (preordered)
    24th Oct Deadspace (possibly)
    31st Oct Fallout 3
7th Nov Gears of war 2
14th Nov COD - World at war

I think my brain may implode at the end of October.

The October releases alone will cost £160 ($297.22) (4 games at £40 each) and I'm hoping to fit a 1080P HD TV in there somewhere as well so I guess I won't be turning the heating on this year (or buying food, socialising, etc.).

So far the first 2 on the list have been released at disappointingly unpolished levels of completion.

  • RerunRerun September 2008

BIA tomorrow, probably won't get to play it 'til Friday or Saturday though. That block of releases in October will be a bitch, I figure I'll get LBP and Dead Space later but Fallout 3 and Fable 2 will still be too big to finish clear of each-other. Since I started watching Firefly again I've been more interested in Dead Space...

Holy crap, really? sneaky sneaky Gearbox. I'm broke though :(, and I just bought STALKER (Which is great) and RB2.

Speaking of which, we need an FB RB Band Topic soon :P

When does Rock Band 2 come out? RB1 is out here (Australia) on November 1, we got raped...

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady September 2008

Yeah I heard Australia just got RB1. That really really blows. RB2 is already out for the 360 and comes out for PS3 in a couple weeks. I hear that they're going to be a little more aggressive with international distribution this time, so keep your fingers crossed.

  • FerrosFerros September 2008

You can import RB2 from Britian if you're desperate for it in Australia but be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for the joy of plastic instruments.

No, November 1, it's not out 'til November 1. It lost my interest when it didn't get released earlier this year, I might buy Guitar Hero World Tour though purely for 'Obstacle 1'...

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady September 2008

Ouch. They really dropped the ball there.

  • SeanSean September 2008

Depending on when RB2 comes to Aussieland, you might be better off just waiting for that release, then renting RB1, and paying the five bucks to transfer all the songs over to RB2.

As for all of the other titles, GameFly is my friend :-)

  • DuderDuder October 2008

Yeah I got gamefly a few weeks ago because of all the games coming out.

Fallout 3 (was really looking forward to this one until I saw those vids from the pirated copy)
    Dead Space
    Legendary
    Far Cry 2
    Mirrors Edge
    Left 4 Dead
and probably a few others im forgetting.

  • Locke+Cole117Locke Cole117 October 2008

Stalker: Clear Sky is amazing. That is all. I've had a few very frustrating crashes, but I still love the game, I just hope it gets patched up a ton.

Also: Anyone been using the new Rock Band.com?

  • AaronAaron October 2008

Thanks to a recent birthday I already have Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway (fucking worth it even if you've grown tired of WWII games like I had), Rock Band 2, Dragon Quest IV, and The Force Unleashed.

Games I'll definitely be getting in the next few months are Fallout 3, Fable II, Chrono Trigger, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Scene It? Box Office Smash, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia .
Games I may pick up this fall and if not definitely when they have a price drop are Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Metal Slug 7, The Last Remnant, and Prince of Persia.

  • John+DarcJohn Darc October 2008

I had always heard from reviewers that BiA was more than just your average WWII shooter, but HH seems to be getting pretty good to mediocre reviews. I'm just thinking of XPlay here, which gave the first BiA a 4/5, IIRC.

edit: Oh snap, it's our very own Elivorio in that Gametrailers video. I think he should have put on the Bro-verfield persona, since he said "Awesome".

I liked the ending, it was the middle section that I hated. I thought that game was very well done, beautiful looking to say the least...

Thanks to the stupidity of the people who work at Kmart i have a copy of Fable 2 in my hands a week before release. I'm enjoying it, it has some issues but i'm still in the new game glow so i can't be very objective. Anywho, i'm gonna go back to Albion, seeya there folks!

Yeah, I forgot you were an Aussie, you lucky bastard. We have a thread on that over at the site I admin, we have no-one on my site who got it, care to tell them how you happened to grab it?

  • AaronAaron October 2008

I was in a local Sears and they had Fable II displayed in the glass case. I tried to get a copy and the guy told me he couldn't sell them until Tuesday. I thought about pushing a washer down an escalator to distract them while I busted into the glass case and secured a copy.

  • FerrosFerros October 2008

A friend of mine told me street date had been broken (There was a notice on Kotaku apparently) by Kmart so i went to my local one and asked if they had it in stock and they sold it to me, it was that simple. They got their arse handed to them by MS though. 50,000 dollar fine and 10,000 dollars on top of that for each copy sold, also they won't have gears of war 2 on launch day. I'd wager the poor girl who sold it to me got in hella trouble.

Yeah that seems to be the news reported. Although I don't think it was the cashiers fault since it happened at other stores as well. Which did you go to?

  • John+DarcJohn Darc October 2008

I don't see why it matters.

What, they need to build anticipation? They want higher opening week sales numbers? Get out of here.

  • SeanSean October 2008

Posted By: John DarcI don't see why it matters.

I don't have any "insider" knowledge on the economics of it, but just logically stepping through it, I would assume that if all retailers were allowed to sell the game whenever they wanted to, it would cause some problems. Due to shipping issues, some stores would get it before others, which would give them an advantage in sales over the ones who get it later. That would cause them to raise hell at the distributor for what would be termed as "unfairness". So to avoid all of that, the distributor ships them out to everyone well in advance of the planned release date, but tells everyone to hold off on selling them to ensure a fair start.

To put it in other terms, think of a movie that is being super-hyped. It's supposed to come out on Friday, but some theaters decide that since they already have the film in hand, who not start showing it on Wednesday instead? So everyone goes to see it in those theaters, taking money away from the theaters who are playing by the rules.

In the end, the people who made the game/movie/whatever need to retain some control over when it gets to the consumers, and keep everyone happy at the same time. Street dates are the method that makes the most sense.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady October 2008

Speaking of keeping everyone happy... ARG! LittleBigPlanet! Arg I say! I wish I had something intelligent to say, but I'm just so full of angst. My Mii is set to Wiimo. Life is pain.

Hopefully none of those statements can be found in the Qur'an, or I may have to retract this post and publish it next week. "Life is pain" sounds Catholic, so I think I'm safe there.
