OK, just listened to the podcast, and I felt compelled to start a thread on True blood. I felt compelled the same way someone from PETA feels compelled to throw red paint on people or dive in front of harpoons.

The series is based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. I have read the first 4 or 5 books in the series. The books straddle the line between chick film and action movie. I feel slightly gay for liking them as much as I do, but they are well written. From the discussion on the podcast, its obvious none of the "core" crew have read the books. Anyone else read these?

  • 15step15step September 2008

I've never read them, but I really like the show so far.

  • Not+MandatoryNot Mandatory September 2008

I haven't read them either, but I probably will since I'm enjoying the show quite a bit.

  • kertapkertap September 2008

I've been really enjoying true blood. I think one of my favorite elements is being able to hear people think. Because it's rogue you get much more interesting stuff than you get in heroes.

What are the books like compared with Anne rice novels?

  • photozzphotozz September 2008

The books are very engaging, Not as dark. more a lighthearted thriller with a few killings here and there and some sexy sexy.

I just managed to watch the 2nd episode on HBO. I'm disappointed with the character design on bill and a few of the other vampires. In the books, they were portrayed as cold, perfect looking creatures. Think gattaca. Other than that, its pretty good. Have to see how well they keep up with it.

  • EddieEddie September 2008

I liked the first episode. Second episode, though, was as full of forced exposition as a silver-age comic book. I know Eli said it was very similar to comics, but I was hoping it wouldn't be THAT similar. I'll keep watching, though; it has potential.

  • RoeRoe September 2008

Have read all save the last two books of the series. If they keep kinda close to the books, should be pretty good. Am waiting for them to get into a few more of the characters and locations in the books before I make a decision on the series. Maybe is just me but they seem to be playing up the awkwardness of Sookie's "power" more in the show then the book (I haven't read them in a few years so could just be a memory lapse).

Overall though, I'll download legally watch the more before making a decision.

Also, if you liked this book series, may like the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Also in the same kind of urban 'things that bump in the night among us' vein. Chick and actiony in a similar way that Sookie Stackhouse series is.

HAHAHAHAHAHA EEEWW!!! Thanks for the visual! I guess I should have expected the level of nudity they are going with, I'm not really sure why I was surprised. It won't stop me from watching it, I just have to make CERTAIN that my kids are asleep before I watch.

Which songs are you talking about, my memory is for shite lately. Also, does anyone else just love the theme song or is it just me?

  • SeanSean October 2008

Spoiler boxes for the songs, only because they relate to plot points.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
"Don't Fear The Reaper" in the vampire bar, and also "That Smell" when Sam was rolling around on the bed at the end of the episode.

The theme song is "I Wanna Do Bad Things With You", by Jace Everett, which actually sounds quite a bit like the Chris Isaak's "Did A Bad Bad Thing". I've always liked that rougher-sounding type of country music, so that was an immediate plus for me. And pairing it up with the deep-South title sequence sets the tone really well.

EDIT: iTunes says the theme song's title is simply "Bad Things"...and there is a club mix. Just saying.

    Yes,
    Spoilers (highlight to read)
Sam is a wearwolf. I thought that was obvious from the second episode on.. The interesting thing about the novels and what kept me on this material is that the basic premise is that Vampires have come out of hiding and integrated with society. Later, you learn there are far more creatures and species still out there that have not revealed themselves yet and are somewhat at odds with the vampires for doing so. It sets up an interesting dynamic and tension, and adds some much needed depth later.

At this rate, were going to need a spoiler only thread.

The transition from that random neighbor saying "to be a fly on that wall!" to the fly crawling on Dawn's lip made me incredibly happy, because it was such a gross, Six Feet Under-y thing to do.

Yeah, same here. I wouldn't classify thirty to ninety seconds of boobs and butts in a fifty-two minute show as "softcore porn". That's kind of like calling The Sopranos nothing more than a weekly snuff film. So far almost all of the sex scenes fit into the story, whether it be with the Sookie/Bill relationship or Jason's growing (pun intended) addiction to V. The script itself is pretty well done as far as I'm concerned. Of course there are a few goofy or awkward lines, but no more than any other show out there. And from what I've read about it, the show follows the spirit of the books very well. That's pretty much all I can ask for.

This is exactly how I feel about Heroes. I'm not reading any of the book-related spoilers posted here until I actually read them. Trying to decide if I want to borrow them from Not Mandatory or buy them.

I loved the non-finale feel of the finale. For some reason it works perfectly in a show like this that's so campy and fast-paced.

I don't think the body is Lafayette's, he's too much of a core character to the series. If it is him though, my prediction is he'll go vampire next season. I like the conflict that is Jessica as well, should bode well for next season...
