OK, just listened to the podcast, and I felt compelled to start a thread on True blood. I felt compelled the same way someone from PETA feels compelled to throw red paint on people or dive in front of harpoons.
The series is based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. I have read the first 4 or 5 books in the series. The books straddle the line between chick film and action movie. I feel slightly gay for liking them as much as I do, but they are well written. From the discussion on the podcast, its obvious none of the "core" crew have read the books. Anyone else read these?
I haven't read them either, but I probably will since I'm enjoying the show quite a bit.
The books are very engaging, Not as dark. more a lighthearted thriller with a few killings here and there and some sexy sexy.
I just managed to watch the 2nd episode on HBO. I'm disappointed with the character design on bill and a few of the other vampires. In the books, they were portrayed as cold, perfect looking creatures. Think gattaca. Other than that, its pretty good. Have to see how well they keep up with it.
Have read all save the last two books of the series. If they keep kinda close to the books, should be pretty good. Am waiting for them to get into a few more of the characters and locations in the books before I make a decision on the series. Maybe is just me but they seem to be playing up the awkwardness of Sookie's "power" more in the show then the book (I haven't read them in a few years so could just be a memory lapse).
Overall though, I'll download legally watch the more before making a decision.
Also, if you liked this book series, may like the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Also in the same kind of urban 'things that bump in the night among us' vein. Chick and actiony in a similar way that Sookie Stackhouse series is.

What all of the rest of the nudity isn't enough for you?! Jeez, I could stand a bit less nudity from the show, truth be told, and I'm not exactly prudish about these things.Book: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell. All I can say is, knowing the books, your going to be disappointed. Nudity galore. HBO is causing a significant increase in tissue consumption around the general area of my couch. My Funny

Yeah, seems to be. From the beginning, you kind of got the feeling that *somebody* was, just from...The two classic songs that were used in the episode were both absolutely perfect also!

I'm enjoying this series a lot more than I thought I would. As much as I hated Anna Paquin in the X-Men series, she is that outstanding in this show! I have no idea how closely the Sookie character is kept to the one in the book, but they pretty much nailed the "southern belle" attitude.I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy

The theme song is "I Wanna Do Bad Things With You", by Jace Everett, which actually sounds quite a bit like the Chris Isaak's "Did A Bad Bad Thing". I've always liked that rougher-sounding type of country music, so that was an immediate plus for me. And pairing it up with the deep-South title sequence sets the tone really well.
EDIT: iTunes says the theme song's title is simply "Bad Things"...and there is a club mix. Just saying.I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy

Episode 4 kinda picked up the series. I was having my doubts, but now I'm at the point where I REALLY wanna see the next episode.MY NAME IS EDDIE ANDTHISIS MY STUFF

| Sam is a wearwolf. I thought that was obvious from the second episode on.. The interesting thing about the novels and what kept me on this material is that the basic premise is that Vampires have come out of hiding and integrated with society. Later, you learn there are far more creatures and species still out there that have not revealed themselves yet and are somewhat at odds with the vampires for doing so. It sets up an interesting dynamic and tension, and adds some much needed depth later. |
Episode 4 pretty much nailed that this show is going to be amazing. At first I wasn't too sure, because the third EP was so hokey.

| did we really need that first five minutes of them boning? I gained no insight into the story. Time that could have been spent on story was instead wasted on a glorified advertising technique/needless softporn clip. |
Let's get real, True Blood is just softcore vampire porn with a script just slightly better than actual porn.

I have to disagree with you on that one.
I do have to share a funny anecdote. 15step was over at our house last Sunday for the most recent ep and my husband made the comment that he doesn't really like to watch the show with other people over because its awkward when they show the sex scenes. He's so dorky and cute.

You know, I can sympathise with that. Its just, a little weird. Its like your unwillingly sharing a rather personal experience with strangers. Its worse if your friends start getting into it, and then they touch your leg an make you cry that one time. *sob*My Funny

OK, I have been having a real problem watching the show. I don't know what it is, but I just can't sit through an entire episode any more. I find my attention drifting away to other things, like "what are the cats doing right now" or "what's that stain on my pants leg..". It might be bad writing, it might be the differences with the books, no idea. I think I'm almost done.

Ok, I went ahead and read all the books (yes all 8 of them. It was a grueling 4 days, but I made it), and I find it really easy to view the show as a separate entity. 4 days?? ... Wha.. how.. your a mutant.
I think that's part of That's my problem. I read most of the books first and am now dealing with the inevitable disappointment if seeing something besides what was in my head. The Harry Potter movies and LOTR are just about the only franchises that seem to have lived up to the books so far. I still have to sit in a dark room and cry in a corner when I think of what those bastards did to Running man.My Funny

So did anybody else find the season finale to be basically just another episode? I still thoroughly enjoyed it, but there was no "holy crap" moment or cliffhanger to end it.

I found the finale to be quite satisfying. It wrapped up the main storyline, and gave us a few new threads to get us to come back next season. Having now read all of the books, I totally called the
