I don't think the body is Lafayette's, he's too much of a core character to the series. If it is him though, my prediction is he'll go vampire next season. I like the conflict that is Jessica as well, should bode well for next season...

NM's reference to "the body in the car" and not specifically "Lafayette's body" is making me think you're right on that. Especially since she's read the books and all. Still, books and adaptations often don't agree, so who knows?

Actually, do the books have the same plot as the series? If so, which one(s) does the first season cover?

The first season pretty much follows the first book, but there are some notable exceptions. From what I've heard Alan Ball didn't plan on following the books too closely, especially after the first season.

Wow, you couldn't find anything? I ACCIDENTALLY got spoiled looking for a screencap once!

Oh, and some dude from that Friday Night Lights show is playing Gambit in the Wolverine movie.

I was reading the reviews of the show on the Onion AV Club site (and MAN do they hate the show), and I saw so many people complaining about the accents on the show, and how Rene was the only one who sounded "authentic". I about had one of those brain things because clearly NONE of them knew where the show was supposed to take place.

Yes, an aneurysm. It takes place in Northern Louisiana. The accents of people up there are much closer to the nasal accents of Arkansas than the "Cajun" accent that Rene affected. That's more of a Southern Louisiana sound, which is what he was using as his cover. Yeah, I'm an anal retentive weirdo.

Exactly! Its not the "bayou"! My husband actually grew up in and around Marthaville (the nearest larger town mentioned on the show). And I second the pronunciation of Keanu to Canoe!

My friend lives in Marksville, which is right smack in the middle of the state. It's really funny to hear her go back and forth between the two accents. Accents she swears she doesn't have of course - she claims *I'M* the one with the accent, being from Jersey and all.

  • SeanSean May 2009

Posted By: Not Mandatory I'm the only one of my friends who has read the books and I'm DYING for discussion
My wife started reading Dead Until Dark (book #1) on Thursday, and pretty much *forced* me to start reading it today just so she could have someone to talk to about it! As of tonight, she just finished book #3 and I am about a hundred pages into book #2. And can I just say....holycrapholycrapholycrapholycrapholycrap!!

Photozz was right that they are a bit...girlie...but I really don't care. They're like the fruity umbrella drinks - you might be really embarrassed to order them, but dammit they just taste fantastic!

For me, this is a rare instance of a show/movie actually *enhancing* my enjoyment of a book (the Dexter book was crap, btw, and after reading it I'm glad the book club voted against my suggestion). The Bon Temps characters are instantly familiar, which solves an issue I often have of not being able to keep track of who is who in a novel. And the WILD differences in sub-plots so far make it feel like the show and book are the same story being told by two different people with different points of view on what the important parts are. Examples - Lafayette's race isn't mentioned until about 3/4 through the first book, whereas in the show the combination of him being both gay and black is a pretty big character development area right from the start. And his penchant for "partying" isn't mentioned until early in the second book. And for what it's worth, Rene isn't nearly as likable, but Eric the vampire leader dude is by FAR my favorite character (a big change from my opinion of his TV character).

......and I just had to erase a "difference between book and show" because I think it might end up being a major plot point in both book and season #2. Sending a message to Not Mandatory now...........

    So yeah...read them.

I dunno, I downloaded some booby clips from this show, and my god are the accents horrible (at least to me, a Yankee fellow). They mentioned that they sound like "Hi yall" on the podcast, and I thought they were kidding.

I still stand by my opinion that the accents are pretty dead-on for the location of the story. It's possible that the accent itself is what sounds "horrible" to you, since it can be taken by northerners to sound stilted or insincere. But the actors generally sound like the characters should, coming from that area. So any issues with the accent are probably less toward the acting, and more toward the 'real-life' accent.

Agreed, it's really fucking stupid when you notice it. I didn't really the first few times I watched each episode but when I realised it was like that episode of HIMYM where everyone discovers the little annoying things that each of the group do, glasses were smashed...

I can agree with that. Everyone in my close family except me has lived in Louisiana or Mississippi at some point and, like most Southern states, once you get out of the big cities the accents are really over the top. As in "Sweet Jesus did I land in some version of The Truman Show and everyone is talking in horrible accents for my benefit?" It's odd that in the Northeast (where I have in fact lived) it tends to be the opposite - it's only in the big cities that you find the really over-the-top accents.

So yeah, they're doing a mostly great job imitating the accent. The Bayou accent sounds ridiculous if you've never really heard it before, but that's true of all accents really.

So that thing that happened with Jason...dream sequence? I know I've said this before, but I *LOVE* how they are taking the basic storyline of the book and just twisting it around until it's a completely different tale. If they tried to follow the books to the letter, I think there would be a lot more complaining about what they "got wrong". Plus it keeps the readers guessing just as much as the non-readers...possibly *more*!

  • didn't it's based on the book ... i thought it's an original show

  • SeanSean August 2009

Would that be a bit of spam sneaking into our board?

Edit - Well, that didn't take long, now did it? *clappy clappy*

  • So season three is coming, is everyone still ecxited about the show? I'm a big fan of how they use the books plots as a basline, but they take it in differnet directions, and am looking forward to some of what i think is coming this season. Plus season 2 is finnaly on DVD, argh i've been waiting for so long to get a hold of it.

  • BillBill May 2010

Nashoba and I will definitely be watching. I have to say I was annoyed with Maryanne last season. My understanding is she played a much smaller part in the books. Other than that, though, it's great, and I'm looking forward to this season.

"Never hold your farts in. They travel up your spine and into your brain, and that's where you get shitty ideas from." - Unknown
  • SeanSean May 2010

I agree with Bill on the whole Maryanne thing. Although for me, that probably has a lot more to do with the fact that I can't stand Michelle Forbes for some reason. My only concern for the upcoming season is (very minor spoiler, since it's been in all the commercials)

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
that the existence of werewolves will be viewed as derivative because of the Twilight series. Yes, we all know that the Sookie books came first, and werewolves in TV/movies/literature have been around forever, but since when does logic enter into popular opinion? The writers could end up trying to do something radically different from the books to make their werewolves "unique", and that could end badly.

Also, there was a 15 minute recap of S1/2 on Saturday night, which I'm sure will be replayed many many times in the next three weeks.

  • Yeah Sean, that is a valid worry, but I'm hopping that we continue to see the focus on the characters we have in the past, and that might just help that problem. Also I'm excited that I might actually have HBO during this season so it will be easier to watch.
