The lock that only lets nerds in
  • joeljoel December 2008

Check this out. Some dude made a door lock that doesn't let you in unless you know the Konami code.

For a potential HE Podcast discussion, what other security measure could you devise that would only let nerds or geeks in?

A garage door that only opens when you are going 88 mph.

Pro tip: This garage should also be equipped with arresting cables like they use on aircraft carriers. Always wear seat belts, kids!

Planetary defense codes that can only be obtained by having sex with a greasy scientist with a Messiah complex.

Okay, I'll bite. How about Plan B? You know... B for barrier.

    How about a combination lock with the combo 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

    You have three questions:

    What is your name?

    What is your quest?

    and then it alternates between:

    What is your favourite colour?
    and
What is the air-speed velocity of the unladen swallow?

I'm on board with that one!

I'd probably make a lock that requires extensive knowledge of Buffy/Angel trivia...because I'm THAT kind of nerd.

It has a bunch of switches and a screen. When the number on the screen pops up, you've got to set the switches to that number in binary before you can open the door.
    331. "That's easy, that's 101010101!"

Along those lines: a clock based on one of those Tokyoflash watches. To open the door you'd have to set a regular clock to the same time.

this is off topic, but related. My roommate in college and I had an idea to create a remote key less entry for our room making use of some kind of high torque step motor, IR receiver and the big knob turned bolt lock on the inside. And all the parts could be bought at radio shack.

The idea was abandoned but I still want to try it someday
