First, here is the relevant story that sparked this discussion: http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/12/17/keanu-reeves-eager-to-do-something-good-with-cowboy-bebop-movie/#more-7631
I can see a few Pros and Cons about this situation.
I for one really enjoyed the original Bebop movie, and while I would like another, I don't think it's the right atmosphere for it to be created in. I like the idea of a live-action movie a little bit, but in order to port it to american mainstream they're going to have to make it stand-alone, and that'll do a huge number on it. Keanu has been in action movies, yes, but the action in cowboy bebop wasn't just pointless lobby-scene grenade-lobbin' funtimes, it was a true physical manifestation of personal conflict between the characters. The gadgets were made real by being very rough around the edges, and over the top CGI plasma streams flyin' outta every orifice they have, a necessity in Hollywood SciFi, would take away from them as a beautiful background and make them into sell-able icons of the film. Also apparently they're calling the Red Eye drug Bebop and doing who knows what with the ship. There's no way they're going to maintain Faye, Spike, and Jet having their own smaller transports, which gave them far more individuality in the series than they can possibly have in the film. I doubt even Faye will have her own, it'll probably, at best, just be Spike's with its over the top Keanu-intensified particle beam.
Also Keanu could NEVER play the ever-overconfident and fun-loving, wide-eyed Spike. Spike is Keanu's antithesis.
Also It's Keanu Reeves.
I quit life.
I can sort of see Keanu being good as Spike, but it's almost a cert that he'll be Keanu first and any resemblence to Spike kinda coincidental.
I'd probably go see it, but there is no way hollywood could not fuck it up - especially if keanu is spike.
I just hope that Keanu dosn't ruin it, which is likly. He makes unicorns cry.
