    It seems like you would just load the MP3 into Audacity. Audacity would convert it to a wav then you can use Cut, Copy, Paste (typical edit tools) to trim down to the parts you want. Check youtube for Audacity wav editing tutorials too.

    Thanks Joel, that was a good idea.

    Dram, apparently the version of Audacity I had got some error. Even with the freshly installed version I have to be careful. I can't have any other processes running and have to give the thing a wide berth when opening a podcast (especially those huge 3 hour ones), otherwise my system will lock up.


    Anyway, I have my first test, where can I upload wav files?

    Ohhhh I didnt think about trying to decompress the 2.5 hours casts. That would probably be 600-800 mb's.

    I actually just had a better idea. It will take some testing but it will save you a ton of time.

    play the mp3 version of the cast with your mp3 player of choice and set audacity to record from your onboard audio. You can queue the MP3's up to roughly where you need them, record for a few minutes with audacity then stop the mp3 and trim to size.

    The quality may not be as good but no one will notice.

    If I was going to grab something quick, that'd be a good plan. However, I'm tempted to try to grab as much fun stuff as possible from any given podcast, and I even have a dream of making a sound clip of EVERY question ever answered. Yes I know it's foolish, and way too much work, but it might finally end people asking the same question over and over again. They could just look up and listen to the answer.

    But first thing's first. Where can I, should I upload these things as I make them, and where's the old sound clips (so I don't upload twice).

    I use Acoustica to edit wav and mp3 clips. It doesn't do anything fancy, but you can mix tracks, cut, copy, and paste. And it'll do the format conversion as well.

I have yet to listen to any other episodes, and I'd rather not spoil them until I get a chance to listen at my own pace. As I listen to and transcript more episodes, I'll take those later requests.

    Also, I seriously need a better website to host these, ideas?

    Was Lost the show that was the opposite of BSG? Like, Alex brought up that Joel hated BSG cause it started in reality and ended in fantasy, and Lost (or some other show) did the same thing and it made sense?

    Blargh, that's it. I've had enough of ADrive, it's too shitty for me to keep using. I need someone to suggest a better online music storage system. I tried finding another, only to find out after setting everything up it's individual file limit was so small (5MB) that I had no chance of uploading any decent size clip. Please guys, I've got 15 episodes worth of clips on my drive, and no place to put them.

    Not sure about where to host them, but if you could please convert them to mp3 before uploading. I downloaded all of the ones from A Drive and realized im going to have to convert them before I can post on the new podcast site.

    You can do them Mono 64kbps VBR with medium compression and they will still sound fine.

    Also, I have PM'd Tarm to get the eps he made clips for but havent received an answer. If anyone has his email please see if he can get those to me.

    It's a really easy codec to download. Audacity just doesn't have the right license or something to bundle the codec with its software.

    Yeah that msg is actually telling you to download the .dll and add it to Audacity so it CAN export mp3's. Thats just how Audacity works. They expect you to make that modification.

But still, Mad Max is a cult-cha-ral institution down under mate, in Australia where I live it's in the National Screen and Sound Archive. Hopefully George Miller won't make it too Japanese or it won't be Mad Max any more...

    Anyway...

    The last podcast was good, I thought it was funny but not as funny as "The Counsellor Palpatine" part of The Usurper episode, that was HILARIOUS. Where's the T-Shirt for that?

    I also find it difficult on the podcast to discern whose voice is whose...

    We dont always answer all of the questions just for the sake of time and/or interest. A better place to post this would be the general Podcast thread. This thread is for posting highlight clips of the show.

    Nothing I can do about making our voices more discernible. Sorry.

    I have to stop using ADrive. I've switched over to a service called Box.net. They don't let me link directly to the file without signing up for pro service, but at least I can upload things a lot easier there (and you can still download it no problem). As well, I can start putting them up in MP3 format. Unfortunately, this also means I've had to re upload all the stuff I've done before. And now that Tarm isn't around, there's no one to convert his stuff. So I guess I'll start redoing his stuff too.

    One more thing Joel, while it may be foolish of me to add an extra idea to the list, would you like me to make that highlights podcast you once spoke of (I don't even recall what podcast it was anymore). Basically, my idea is I'll find some very general theme like all the decapitation stories, all the musicals, all of the racist jokes, all of the horrible and disturbing stuff, whatever. I then cobble all of those various MP3 clips into 60-90 minutes and you can whip that podcast out next time your hard drive crashes or anything stops you from doing the podcast. Hell, you might even be able to take a vacation for one weekend. Would that be okay? Would you want me to make the highlights podcast differently?

    If I am hosting them you can just look at the source code and link directly to the files. THough I am probably not going to upload every single clip ive got. I think it would be overload and the idea is to give new listeners or potential listeners a sample.

    I have all of Tarm's clips as MP3's. They are good to go. Just waiting until I have time to actually tackle the project.

    Blargh. Okay Fancy Bastards, any of you who have used Audacity before, look at this:



    This is what happens when I open up Podcast 9 (doesn't matter how many times I reinstall Audacity or Redownload Podcast 9). As you can see for some reason there are two channels (no other podcasts do this). That second channel is just pure noise, you can hear any of the actual podcast. Apparently the top one (the podcast) is the left channel, and the bottom one (the noise) is the right channel. While I can adjust the volume to only hear the podcast (which is VERY low) if I cut this up I still get the noise. How can I completely eliminate the right side?

    I think the bottom channel might include the background music, as it might look that way at that zoom level, but you'd probably know.

    Blargh, it's happened again with Podcast Episode 14. If I can't figure this out, i"ll have to record off of Winamp playing the podcast and take it that way (not sure how the quality will suffer).

    The irony is one of the most important podcast questions (how'd you guys meet & how'd you start the comic) is on episode 9

    I finally hit my limit on Box.net, and I then realized that I being so disorganized would make it hard to know which of the multiple accounts I now have for Box.net would make it hard to find titles.     By the way, I want to get the opinion of the Fancy Bastards on something. I'm going to start cobbling together full podcasts from these clips soon, to give Joel something to post when he can't get the crew together or he's too busy working on a commission. Question is, what do you want in a highlight reel?

    I could do Highlight Podcasts based on their order. In other words, cobble together highlights from episodes 1-7, 8-14, 15-21,22,28, and so on... It would allow for a variety of subjects, and best of all for me I'd be able to do the podcast clips in a logical order while I continue to try to get clips from every podcast. The other way is to do topical podcast, like a podcast based solely on gays, racism (Filipinos/Mexicans), Different Imitations and Voices, various stories told by the crew, or even podcast focused on just one of the cast members. This kind of podcast would be more clear, but might grind against your nerves after an hour. Also, it'd force me, whenever I make this, to dive into various podcasts I haven't done yet and try to find pieces that are missing (The podcast clips that I have done, I've added tags to just to make this easier).

    Also, I plan to make the Podcast Highlight reel an hour long, do you think that's sufficient or does it need to be longer?

    I could do Highlight Podcasts based on their order. In other words, cobble together highlights from episodes 1-7, 8-14, 15-21,22,28, and so on... It would allow for a variety of subjects, and best of all for me I'd be able to do the podcast clips in a logical order while I continue to try to get clips from every podcast. The other way is to do topical podcast, like a podcast based solely on gays, racism (Filipinos/Mexicans), Different Imitations and Voices, various stories told by the crew, or even podcast focused on just one of the cast members. This kind of podcast would be more clear, but might grind against your nerves after an hour. Also, it'd force me, whenever I make this, to dive into various podcasts I haven't done yet and try to find pieces that are missing (The podcast clips that I have done, I've added tags to just to make this easier).

    Also, I plan to make the Podcast Highlight reel an hour long, do you think that's sufficient or does it need to be longer?

    I think one hour is fine for the 1–7/8–14/etc. podcasts. For topical, 30–45 minutes would probably be better. I would personally prefer the topical podcasts.
