as briefly mentioned in the 41st podcast (with extra discussion in the post show), i wanted to see if there is any interest amongst you lovely fancy bastards in starting a book club. it would be a geek-oriented, of course: fantasy, sci-fi and graphic novels. we'll put out a poll every month to vote on a book to read then we'll open up a thread for discussion.

first assignment will probably coming up with a name for this book club...

anyway, this is just me sending out "feelers" into the void. comment here if you are seriously interested in this...

  • DramDram January 2009

Of course we're all seriously interested, it's you.

I'm more of a pictograph man myself, but if words are your thing may I suggest the Refined Society of Strange Reads.

    Also your feelers are sticky.

    Also David Eddings bee-yatch!

  • SeanSean January 2009

My bookshelf could use an injection of geekery, so I'd be interested as well. Dead Until Dark (the 'True Blood' book) was my next planned read, but that can wait a bit.

  • DuderDuder January 2009

    Club of Bookery?

    I Can Has Books?

Sadly my recreational reading has been on a steady downward arc since I was about ten. Last thing I read was a year or two ago and they were the 1st and 2nd Dexter books.

Wait I did read the Angel comics a couple weeks ago, they were awesome.

  • FrackTruckFrackTruck January 2009

I'd be down, I need to force myself to read some more since usually I leave books unfinished for years, not kidding.

  • Mutant+EnemyMutant Enemy January 2009

I definitely would be interested, I would suggest World War Z.

  • DramDram January 2009

Posted By: Mutant EnemyI definitely would be interested, I would suggest World War Z.It's like looking into the eye of a duck and sucking all the fluid from its beak. -Bernard from Black Books

Oh, good idea. I need someone to force me to read that already.

  • Locke+Cole117Locke Cole117 January 2009

I'd love to, the only impediment is a stack of books I just received, but haven't read. The pile ranges from Dystopia, to Monasteries, to elaborate non-fiction. But I need more Geekery, and I trust the FBs for all my Geek love.

  • ArcysArcys January 2009

    I up for this.

My suggestion is Asimov's Foundation series, but I've already read that as probably most others have too.

The only problem with that series is determining which books you include: the empire novels? the Lije Baley/Daneel Olivaw books? etc. etc.

  • John+DarcJohn Darc January 2009

Can it be pictures with words? Or will it just be words?

  • MelkorMelkor January 2009

I'm definitely interested, one can never have enough to read.

  • BillBill January 2009

    Sounds fun.

I am so in! BTW, I just finished the True Blood series, and I definitely recommend!

  • Not+MandatoryNot Mandatory January 2009

    I'm in!

  • EddieEddie January 2009

    I'm down.

  • FlankedFlanked January 2009

    All aboard!

I suggest George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, which starts with A Game of Thrones, the book that has been mentioned on the HE podcast as filming a pilot for HBO. I highly recommend these books to anyone. The one major concern is that the series is not yet finished, and may not be for decades years.

An awesome suggestion...but I've already read all of the published volumes.

  • EddieEddie January 2009

Regarding a suggestion: I haven't read this book, but I've heard nothing but good about it; it's called "Playing For Keeps" by Mur Lafferty. It's a superhero-themed novel, and if it's anything like "Soon I Will Be Invincible" by Austin Grossman, a similarly-themed novel, it probably kicks ass.

  • Not+MandatoryNot Mandatory January 2009

I would like to suggest "A Canticle for Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller Jr. It was recommended to me by several people, whose judgment about good books I trust, and I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

  • MelkorMelkor January 2009

Other than Song of Ice and Fire, which has already been added, I suggest Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson as well as the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix.
Abhorsen follows a young Necromancer, and Cryptonomicon is essentially about cryptology.

  • BillBill January 2009

I'm currently reading an early George R. R. Martin novel, Fevre Dream. It's vampires, but it's Martin, so it works itself out.

I've been meaning to pick that up- I've read some of his older sci-fi, Dying of the Light an such.

Also, I've been looking for the graphic novel version of Martin's prequel to ASOIAF, "The Hedge Knight." Anyone had a chance to read that yet?

  • denisedenise January 2009

    oh hai!

it looks like i started something, wandered away to inspect something shiny, and came back to a nice healthy geek mob. :)

    yay though!

joel has said that the bookclub will probably need its own category, so that we can have threads for each book chosen. the first post will be a poll on what book to read first.

wow, i'm so excited that you guys are on board with this!

so my suggestion for the book club name is "The Bookery." obviously i am not a marketing genius or a wordsmith so if someone can come up with something more clever, please for the love of god say something.

ps: to whoever asked if "books with pictures" will be included, i would LOVE to hear some suggestions for graphic novels too, those will most assuredly make the polls.

    Hello Fancy Bastards!

"Legion of the Damned" by William Deitz is fairly decent sci-fi. It's got big stompy robots, nekkidness, and the ubiquitous aliens in need of stompin'.
Deitz also did some graphic novels that i remember being really cool based on the Star Wars Dark Forces: Jedi Knight games.

  • joeljoel January 2009

Ok, I'm ready to launch the new category and polls for the book club, but I need a name. Post your ideas for a name (please try to work in a geeky book or library reference for bonus points) and then I'll post a poll so we can vote on the name.

I used to work in a library, let me see what I can come up with...

    (library) SCIENCE

    The Book Sack

PR6051.D3352 H5 (the library of congress designation for Hitchhikers guide) or something similar

remember when the term "card catalog" was literal

    The Reading Rainbow Coalition

if I come up with more I will edit, I can come up with slogans into next week, but names themselves aren't flowing tonight

GENIUS! i love that episode. that might lean too much towards the TNG fans and we might want somethign broader... but i have to say that this one is an awesome suggestion. wish i had thought of it, damn!

  • HeronSilverHeronSilver January 2009

I'm up for the book club as well! Be good to have an excuse to try to start reading again.

A bit brain fried so not sure on what to suggest for forum names...

"Hooked on Geekery" ( reference to those awful "Hooked on Phonics" programs)
"Anachronistic Intertubes" or "Clogging the Braintubes" (I dunno... something to do with books being like the InTarWebz of the Ancients... well or of our parents/grandparents)

  • JustChristineJustChristine January 2009

I'm down for a book club! "To read makes our speaking English good!" Yes. Yes I did pull a very old (season 1 of 'Buffy' old) Xander Harris quote out of my brain for this occasion.

  • MelkorMelkor January 2009

The Sindarin term for book is "parf" which doesn't sound good at all, "Mil An Certhas" or "Prestanneth An Certhas" essentially means affection for the alphabet.
But using Elvish is probably even more obscure than the TNG reference.

How about "The Literature Literate" ?

  • Llama_BillLlama_Bill January 2009

I'm all for a book club. Tally-ho! How about:
Centre for kids who can't read good, now three times bigger!
Something ripped off Zoolander would be grand.

I like Booksplode!, The Fancy Bastards Society of Literary Snobbery and Bookery for Beginners the best.
If we can have books with pictures then I vote for some Where's Wally action.
