Hey, I'm trying to get slightly further away from my inevitable death. Do you Fancy Bastards have any suggestions for workout music?
Old school hip-hop and anything by The Faint. Also, "Groove is in the Heart" by Dee-lite is impossible not to move to. I use it as a robot test.
When you're doing weights you want something with a good beat that will subconsciously help you keep your movement steady and regular, helps prevent strains or injury. For cardio it depends, me personally i agree with Eli. I usually end up listening to a podcast (The HE one will get you funny looks when you burst out loud laughing during Al Qaeda tech support on a stationary bike) but if you're having trouble getting your heart rate up, something with a fast tempo will make you move more quickly. Which is why gyms so often have bloody techno blasting out.
Anything with the "double-kicks".

Posted By: Elithe other thing to consider is that it takes about a solid 45min for your heart rate to kick up. this is generally a good thing to keep in mind cause that helps you on a day to day basis. it is probably best to workout for a min of 45 min and a max of 1.5 hours.
I've noticed that when I'm walking that it takes 30 - 40 mins to break a sweat and get my heart rate up. I just ordered a book on slow burn fitness, so I'll be doing that 1-2 times a week plus walking.

i have all kinds of bad body parts. i had surgery on my lower back and knee but sometimes you have to fight through it. i have been off my schedule due to finding work but i made it a point to go exercise. a good 15 min cardio and then arms, chest, legs and stomach. of course the really hard part is food. in order for any of this to work you have to watch what you eat. i did the south beach diet and it worked for me but of course once you stop and start regular patterns of eating you put it back on. in my case i went from 240 down to 185. i got back into back habits and have gone back up since. now the south beach diet only kinda works in that you will see how you can eat just as good of food but better. if you work hard enough at the diet you learn how to cut down on things like carbs and work in things that are better for you.
I've lost about 25 lbs just through diet by cutting out the vast majority of carbs and all sugar. (not even Coke zero, stupid cancer sugar) Lots of protein, lots of vegetables and eating protein every 2 - 4 hours to keep up my metabolism. I also used it as an excuse to teach myself to cook (thanks internet!). I'm not really struggling with sticking to it so far, except for occasionally craving pasta or coke. a cola, I mean.

I lost 20 pounds over the course of a year just by giving up full-calorie soda. I lost an additional 60 pounds by calorie counting. I designed a spreadsheet that monitors my weight and calorie intake and automagically sets daily calorie goals for me based on tips from The Hacker's Diet (written by the guy that designed AutoCAD). That put me right at the very top of "healthy weight" for my height, according to BMI (222 lbs for 79"). Turns out that was way too thin - I looked like some sort of ghoul. Thanks BMI! I decided I should probably gain a little bit back, got a little lax, and overshot my new target a little bit (over the course of a few years). Now I'm back to using the spreadsheet again to trim that extra stuff off. 240-245 seems to be an actual reasonable healthy weight for me, BMI be damned.
Anyway I know this is just bringing us further away from the topic but I thought I'd share. On other diets I was always trying to find ways to game the system (Atkins? No problem - I'll eat infinite amounts of pepperoni!), but the simple reality is that the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Period. Fad diets always left me miserable too because there was always something that I really wanted and was forbidden from having. OK for short-term loss, I guess, but if you want to keep weight off you have to make lifestyle changes. I found that calorie counting let me have my favorite "bad" foods if I really decided they were that important (often not worth the sacrifices I'd have to make elsewhere in the day), and really helped me to educate myself about portion sizes and which foods were best left as rare treats. I lost weight slowly over time and developed better eating habits (rule #1: enjoy your food!). Even though I did gain back a little more than I liked, I am still a much better eater than I was when I was riding the wave of my college-age metabolism.
