    Following up on this topic

Thanks to EVERYONE who's sent me suggestions here on the forums, or on Twitter! I've compiled quite a list of movies to watch, most of which I've never seen before, which is GREAT!

As such, I've declared February to be "Fancy Bastard Movie Month" for the project, and I'm going to try to have at least 50% of the movies I watch this month come from all the suggestions I've already received from you Fancy Bastards (or any more you'd like to provide). Hopefully I will survive it!

Also, here are some stats from the first month of the project:

    Movies Watched: 65
    Unique Titles: 64
Movies I've Never Seen Before: 43
Most Productive Day: 7 movies on Jan 17th
Days In Which At Least One Movie Was Watched: 27 of 31

    Netflix: 11 (including 1 instant-play)
    Cable: 43
    DVR'd: 13
    Downloads: 6
    IMAX!: 1
Movies that were recommended: 3 (Thanks to FBs Denise and JonnyAce for kicking off my recommendations)

I watched an average of 2.4 movies over the days in which movies were watched (this drops to 2.1 movies/day for the entire month). 2/3 of the movies I watched were movies I had never seen before.

I am 12.8% of the way towards reaching my goal of watching 500 unique titles this year.

So, is this for fun, or is this like, a job? What are you trying to achieve with this?

I guess my real question is, how do you sit around so much and watch so many movies?

I survive easily on >4 hours sleep, that's my answer...

    EDIT: That's less than... Argh...

The short and sweet of it: It's a hobby. Sitting at home and watching movies is much more economical than going out to the bar on weekends. Also, I don't really sleep more than 3-4 hours a night.

    But here's the backstory:
The idea of keeping track of what I watch first came about at the end of 2007, when a friend of mine shared with me a list he kept of every movie he watched since 2003. He generally mocked me for not having seen most of the movies he had seen, and thus we began creating what was referred to as my "Cinematic Palsy" list, which was a list of all the movies that people thought I should have seen but hadn't (read: Predator, The Godfather, Goonies, etc...). These two things led to the 407-movie year I had last year, which taught me a lot of things, but mainly 1) when I really like something I tend to watch it over and over again, and 2) there's a lot of really good shit out there that I haven't seen, because I spend most of my time watching really bad shit.

The 2009 project (and my goal of watching 500 unique titles) is mostly just a challenge to myself to see if I can do it.

It also gives me a chance to do some number-crunching that DOESN'T have to do with television (which is my job). And eventually, I might use my experience from the project to write something (I was inspired by a book I read about a guy who watched something like 11 TVs at once, for a week - which I now can't remember the title, but it's on my bookshelf at home).

Isn't there ever a time where you go "I do not wish to see this film. I do not wish to give it a chance, for it can only end in heartbreak."?

In unrelated news, I saw Better Luck Tomorrow and Darjeeling Limited today. I guess I should start my list for the year. We have to have seen the whole movie, right? Or at least "FEEL" that we saw the whole film?

There have been times like that, though to be honest they are rare - because I will watch even movies I know I'm going to hate (ask JonnyAce about how I watched "Meet The Spartans" even though we had JUST discussed how horrible its existence was).

If I didn't watch the whole movie, I tend to mark it down but with the qualification of how much of it I watched (like if I start a movie one day and finish it another, or if it's a movie I've seen before but came in at the middle). But it's really a personal preference. I tend to not watch movies unless I can catch them from the beginning, and once I start something I HAVE to finish it.

oh man, Brick. That movie was tough to watch, just cause I had no idea what was happening half the time, and the other half of the time the characters talked they were private gumshoes (which I get was the point).

Thanks for the recommendations! I've added both of them to the pool of movies to watch :)

If you like pretty movies, I have a few to recommend.

Mongol is slow, but so very, very beautiful. It's subtitled, though, so be sure to watch it on something other than an iPod. Rob Roy has one of the best sword fights I've ever seen in a film and also shows off Scotland at its most wonderful. It's also on Hulu right now, so catch it if you can. The Black Stallion will make you want a horse, even if you've never even ridden one. You'll feel like you, too, have galloped bareback on the beach.

If you're into French films, I must recommend Babette's Feast, but don't watch it when you're hungry, or you'll end up pigging out. Also, Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy: Blue, White, and Red. Very visceral films, especially Blue. Not exactly feel-gooders, but good films none the less.

Luck with the movie quest. It sounds like fun.

    Re: The Fountain

"Is that guy in love with a tree?" as per the HE Cast's recollection of dummies who didn't "get" the movie.

So I saw CJ7 today. Besides all the crossdressing, that movie was pretty lame. Not that I dig crossdressing, but The main boy is played by a girl. Just goes to show how androgynous we Asians really are.

I also should recommend Hedwig and the Angry Inch. And oldie but goodie. I always get the Sugar Daddy song stuck in my head at inappropriate times.

And while we're going with sex changes, see Breakfast on Pluto. Really, I just love Cillian Murphy, even in fishnets and hooker hoofs.

    ...maybe especially in fishnets...

Posted By: FlankedI also recommend Pi and Requiem for a Dream.

Good suggestions; two of my favorite movies.

I also recommend 8 femmes. It's a French film, so find it subtitled if you can. (My religion compels me to slaughter Consumers of the Dub with a vintage tea kettle.)

Thanks for all the recommendations!!! I've got to go through the past couple days worth of recommendations and get my list updated. I see a couple of movies in the past few posts that I DEFINITELY want to watch sooner rather than later, if I have my way.

Step Up 2: The Streets - Its pure joy, break-dancing joy.

The Lookout w/ Joseph Gordon Levitt - Fantastic film by the writer of Out of Sight

Hahaha I watched this last month! Dance movies are my guilty pleasure.

The Lookout w/ Joseph Gordon Levitt - Fantastic film by the writer of Out of Sight

This was quite an interesting movie, but I definitely preferred the first half of it to the second, JGL's character was quite interesting to watch.

"8 Femmes" is, indeed, fantastic - the less you know about it before watching it, the better...

I also recommend "Perfume - The Story of a Murderer" for some excellent, mind-messing weirdness and "Renaissance" for quality dystopian B&W French anime goodness (with added Daniel Craig voiceover, if that's your bag).

And for some enjoyably terrible absurdity and gore, why not check out Renny Harlin's "Mindhunters", from a few years back. Half-"CSI" clone, half slasher flick, all kinds of bad and entertaining...

If I were to recommend something, it would most definitely be Session 9. Spooky movie. I've always wanted to do something like this, but I don't think I have the attention span for it. I love movies, and I own nearly 500 DVDs, but it still takes me half an hour to forty five minutes to decide what I want to watch...Generally it ends up being Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, or the aforementioned Session 9.

I've got one I finally got around to starting last night: The Great Dictator, written, directed, produced by, and starring Charlie Chaplin. It's his first talkie from 1940 and it features him playing the role of both a poor Jew barber in the ghetto and Hynkel the dictator, a parody of Adolf Hitler. The raw cinematics of the thing given the time period are astounding. It's got some great slapstick with good story and extremely moving imagery and dialog.
You might, upon hearing all that, think of the movie suspiciously as propaganda. It's not. Chaplin made the movie despite an unspoken policy of Hollywood at the time not to criticize Hitler. The movie was very controversial, and helped sway the American people into entering WW2.

I hear Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" is a cinematic trainwreck, so you know it's gotta be good.

    @ Dram

It's a good one, but I don't think it's his first talkie. Modern Times was the film when the Tramp first spoke, and that was in 1936. Chaplin was being leaned on by the studio to speak, so when the Tramp finally did, it was complete gibberish. It's also one of his best films. I highly recommend adding it to the list.

Wikipedia calls it his first "real" talkie.

This thread way back inspired me to, if not see lots of movies, catalog the movies I have seen this year.

I've got a .txt with the titles of the movies I've seen, but I really hope I'm not forgetting something. I feel like I've forgetting to write down a movie that maybe I saw on TV or in passing and didn't get to write down in time. Just saw In Bruges tonight.
