Song of Ice and Fire series (George R.R. Martin)
  • I love this series, and am DYING for A Dance With Dragons. It has been a long time coming, so far its supposed to be released this fall, but we'll see. Anyone else read these awesome books?

  • MelkorMelkor May 2008

Yes, Song of Ice and Fire is fantastic! I can't wait for Dragons.

  • denisedenise May 2008

I read his blog periodically. I hope he wraps it up soon. I was blown away by the first three books. After waiting so long for the fourth one though, I was a little disappointed. I hope Dance is better, I need my Arya and Tyrion fix!

Favorite characters: Tyrion, Arya, Jaime, Daenerys (in that order)
Favorite battle: The Red Viper vs The Mountain

I also read a couple of the spin-offs, I guess you could call them, about Duncan and Egg. The first one was fantastic, the second one not so much but still a fun read.

  • I never read the "spin-offs", should I give them a shot while waiting for Dragons?

  • dougdoug May 2008

Thanks for reminding me about these!

I should pick them up again; I had stopped part way through the third (can't even remember why). The only problem would be I'd really need to start over again--I was reading them in 2001-2, and I'm sure I've forgotten too much to just pick up in the middle of 3.

A friend had introduced me to the books--he had me read a chapter or two in the first book, and, man, they were exciting and gripping. It was just hard because I grew attached to some characters, and the minute I started to really like someone--bang!--they were gone.

When I discovered these books almost ten years ago, I devoured A Game of Thrones in a single day. I was thoroughly entertained. A Storm of Swords made me love and hate the characters. Then I had to wait. And wait. And wait. Then A Clash of Kings came out and it was glorious. Then I waited even longer still for a fourth book. Years later, I read A Feast for Crows and I felt only marginally sated. I've never written anything, so I can only pretend to know what it's like to manage that cast of thousands. But I do know waiting for these masterpieces is unbearable.

All I want out of this series is to know before I die who Jon Snow's father truly is.

I enjoyed reading them if only because they're in the same universe. They are in a different time period though (a few hundred years before the SoIaF books) so it still feels fresh and different.

You can find Hedge Knight I and II in the "Legends" anthologies and they've also come out with a very good comic of the first one. The second one is coming out in a couple of months, I believe.

There are some pretty excellent battles in there and the usual great character development. I'd definitely recommend reading them if you're jonesing for a Westeros fix.

Awesome, I will definitely look for them, thanks!

...could make sweet, sweet love to these books in a literary orgy... except for all the gross parts... and the papercuts...

I too am waiting for Dance, like most people. I recently started reading George's Not a Blog, and I'm kinda confused. Is Dance done and he's working on the next one? He blogged about finishing an Arya chapter, but my impression from the last book ending was that he was dividing up the cast list between the last book and this book, and with Arya being in Feast, that well, she wouldn't be getting chapters in Dance.

Ah well, not that it matters anyway. I've read/listened to all the books probably at least twice, if not more. I listened to Feast on a mini-road trip (and several week thereafter) recently in prep for Dance to come out soon so I'd be half able to follow it.

Anyone know, is it supposed to be two more books after Dance? I do hope he finishes it sooner rather than later, don't want another Robert Jordan (not that I read his books, couldn't get past page 50 of the first one for some reason).

I remember that from an interview with George he said there was going to be seven book. Now, since he had to split "A feast for Crows" in half, I wonder if he's going to make 8 books? He better hurry up, he isn't getting any younger.
I am so upset. I pre-ordered "A Dance with Dragons" for September 20th, then I got an email from Borders saying "Sorry, George R.R. Martin didn't get off his ass in time to get it to us, so your a sorry sap and are going to have to wait till January" or something like that.

I also cannot read Robert Jordan's writing. Several peripheral relatives have bought me copies of The Wheel of Time for birthdays and such because, truth be known, my legal name is Robert Jordan. Jordan's writing just felt boring and frankly unoriginal. I felt like I was reading the plot to a final fantasy game.

    Game of Thrones Pilot confirmed.
    I'm cautious, but still excited.

I started re-reading A Game of Thrones last week and I'm now about 2/3 of the way through. I'm still blown away by these stories and I seem to find details I've forgotten or skipped over every time I re-read. I can only say I have mixed feelings about ASoIaF coming as a screenplay. I like the idea of live action story, but TV has it's own limitations that the book medium is able to skip over. The characters feel so alive in the novels that I'm scared they would be misrepresented in a live action take. I'll still watch it if it ever does get to series or mini-series, but I'm certainly much more excited for the next novel.

I adore these books and have re-read them multiple times...I have serious reservations of how its going to translate to the Screen though; the fact that its on HBO gives me hope at least.

What I've heard recently is that Mr. Martins publisher has given a provisional release date of April 2009 for Dance :( Still a long way away

OK, I can't help it any more. Every time I see the title of this thread, all I can think of is this:

Yes, I know it has nothing to do with the the book, and there is nothing about "ice" in there, but dammit, my brain just won't stop it.
    Dragonforce is the shizzy.

    carry on.

Oddly enough, I can only read these books with "Through the Fire and Flames" on infinite repeat.
