Did anyone else manage to capture the newest Discovery Reality TV experiment? I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am looking forward to future episodes.

To summarize: 10 volunteers are placed in a post-apocalyptic situation for 10 weeks; forced to survive with only the tools they can create from the wreckage, protect themselves and their supplies from brigands, and resolve any differences among eachother in their methods of survival.

I watched it, and I too am enjoying it in large amounts.

I think the Handyman (Mike, I think it is) is gonna be a point of serious tension in the group due to his HUEG LIEK ECKSBAWKS ego.

I think Mike's going to cause alot of conflict simply because he's dominant. He seems to want to be the alpha male all of the time, and as things get worse, I think we'll see him slip. There's also the issue of security, and I'm sure that not everyone in the group is going to want to be as extreme as Mike in that regard.

EDIT: the attacks at night were terrifying; I really like how they're handled.

I laughed OUT LOUD at the part where the narrator says the attackers were instructed to harm the colonists, BUT THE COLONISTS DIDN"T KNOW THAT.

Holy fuck, what did they tell the Colonists? Defend yourself or else they'll fuck you up?

After the second episode I can already tell that Mike is going to be the biggest source of tension. In the confessional tapes he constantly complains about the people with degrees thinking they're more intelligent than him and then stating that they're wrong. Hubris in large amounts.

Also, I kinda feel bad for the old beardly guy, the electrical technician. He steps in and gives advice, but keeps getting shot down by some of the other colonists.

I'm watching it in bits and pieces during breakfast, so I'm about 2/3 through the first ep. So far it's keeping my attention, which is no small feat when I've just woken up! Mike is already being a dick, but the most interesting part of his role so far was repeating about five times that "I am not in charge" when the other 4 'survivors' showed up at the door.

As for the attacks, I'm wondering if we'll see any sort of personal struggle between A) I know that it's a game/experiment, so I shouldn't hit this guy with a pipe; and B) I need to defend my food/water supply from these attackers, so it's clobberin' time!
The psychologists keep talking about how the colonists are going to make this thing more and more real in their minds, so B becomes a pretty good possibility!

I completely agree about Mike, however I have to resonate the statements "old beardly guy" made in that I wouldn't have him leave for anything; he's uber important in keeping priorities and common sense. He's just arrogant about it.

OBG (as I will refer to him from now on) will probably get bitter towards the rest of the colony because they ignore him.

I realize that in order to give a somewhat compelling story, they have to edit things in a certain way and such, but still, I hate when it's blatantly obvious. Okay, you're going to have a lot of people attack the colony. Okay, you established someone pointed out the vunerability and it cost the colonists, that's fine. But don't spend 30 freaking minutes of the episode trying to establish how everything is perfect, peaceful, and fine, so it can be a huuuge shock when they start yelling at each other after the attack. It just feels so perfectly edited together to tell the story that it takes me out of the moment.

    Otherwise, enjoyed this third episode.

    Anyone else still watching?

I felt the "disapearance" of George just completely threw me out of the moment. Don't have the announcer just explain it, give a reason in context. Have a sudden group of maruders swarm the building, and then remove George. That way it can be assumed the maruders kidnapped George. Heck, maybe later they could be forced to save him or trade for him. As well, having George give a short explanation of "where he is" at the end made it even worse, it now feels more like Survivor and less like Mythbusters :(

    Oh well, still watching it.

Yeah, that threw me off as well. Curse the LCD editing. I'm still loving the show however, I just realize that they're probably still trying their hardest to gain viewers. and we're only in the 4th week out of 10.

EDIT: I ended up ignoring all of that editing, for the sake of the show's core concept: the interaction between the survivors. Also, watch John has been so awesome, everything he's done turns out to be amazing in context.

Give them credit for one thing, in a handful of episodes it feels like we've covered an incredibl large amount of ground.

Not only that, but it's been handled in a generally compelling manner. Do you think that if they did a second "scenario" with a different set of people, it would work? For me, all signs point to no, sadly.

What, a second season? It'd be difficult to do, but in a completely different setting, maybe they could (Military instalation or something).

I was hoping that George would be "kidnapped" and we'd see him trying to signal the other members of the colony his location.

I can't remember where I heard this, but I sear the colony was mentioned as "season 1" somewhere. Also, I really hope that they split the crew into two, so that we can see George escape. That could actually be really awesome. /herestohoping

I would disagree with having George return to the group, only because it would mean he would have to explain to the group where he was and what happened. They haven't asked anyone to do any acting so far (that we're aware of), so that could take us out of the realm of "real people".

That brings up the only real sore spot with me about this show - it's supposed to show how people can build a new society using only their life experience, but there is WAY too much 'deus ex machina" for my taste. It feels like if one of them said "we could really use a box of grass skirts," they would find one in a "previously undiscovered area of the warehouse"! Plus, they are surrounded by cameras, and regularly give recaps in the 1-on-1 booth. It's still an interesting show, but I find myself laughing more each time one of the psychologists says how real this is to them.

Also, am I the only one who wants to hit the nurse with something very very heavy?
