Here's the deal. Either due to the timing of my childhood, my move from Canada to America, or just due to never being a movie buff I've seemed to miss a lot of movies in my lifetime. So much so that I started to make a list of movies I NEED to see.
    Here's the list.

I was originally planning to stop at 101, but at this rate I'm not sure when the list will stop, as it appears I've missed a lot. Eventually I plan to start a blog, where once a week I watch one of these movies, and write my opinion on them. But first, gotta get this list as big and detailed as possible. So, if you have the time, look over the list and suggest any movies you see missing (you probably shouldn't assume I've seen them). If you don't have the time, I have a few more specific questions:

Should I watch the "New" Star Wars Trilogy? I only saw Episode I and never saw any reason to go back to see the other two. Is it something that I need to experience or would be better off without.

Should I watch ALL of the Star Trek movies? I've only seen the 2009 reboot. I put the Original Series Star Trek movies, but I heard the TNG ones were crap.

How many Alien movies should I watch?
How many Friday the 13th movies should I watch?
How many Nightmare on Elm Street movies should I watch?
How many Halloween movies should I watch?

I don't want to watch ALL of the Bond movies, so I'm trying to watch 1 Sean Connery, 1 Pierce Brosnan, and 1 Daniel Craig to get a good taste. Right now I've got Goldfinger (Connery), and Casino Royale (Craig). Any suggestion for the Brosnan Bond? Any suggestion for different movies to represent the other Bonds?

What was the recent movie where the actor was a cop going undercover in a mafia, I remember essentially seeing the YouTube clip of the ending that involved every person dramatically killing the next in a 5 minute spree of blood splatter.

The only Hitchcock movies I have on the list is Psycho. I also have seen The Birds already. Any other Hitchcock movies?

When it comes to just general suggestions, anything from late 70s, 80s, and early 90s is encouraged, as that seems to be the era I missed out on.

I think the movie you saw with the undercover cop w/ a blood bath was The Departed (Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson) which was a recent American remake of the Chinese movie Infernal Affairs.

    Some suggestions:
Batman films (Tim Burton era: Batman/Batman Returns and Nolan era: Batman Begins/The Dark Knight)
Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill)
John Hughes (the quintessential 80s director. check out The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles)
    Empire Records

Re: Star Wars, I'd suggest you try it out, at the least so you can have an opinion about it.

For the Brosnan Bond I would recommend Goldeneye, it the best (in my opinion, anyway).
For Hitchcock, either Rear Window or Vertigo (or both).
After reviewing your list.... Fist Full of Dollars was better than A Few Dollars More, IMO. And I would recommend Two Mules for Sister Sarah as another Clint Eastwood option. You should also watch at least 1 John Wayne too, I'd say either True Grit or Hatari! (My favs).
If Dark Crystal isn't on your list, it should be. So Should Boondock Saints (the second movie comes out Oct 30!).
That's a start anyway. Plus I've just maxed out my ability to create links. Sounds like a fun project!

Oookay. On top of your suggestions, I mentioned this little project to my coworkers, who are apparently film buffs because they doubled the already overly swollen list. After much belly aching I've gotten the list down to 101.

You'll notice that below the movies labeled 101 are ones labeled 201, that's because there a bunch of movies I'm aching to get into that 101 list, and still trying to figure out what I can add or lose. Even after that 201 is about 300 more movies that I will eventually want to see, but have to stay out of the current 101 list.

The link to the list again

And the full list for those too lazy to click:

Some of the movies that are on the 201 list that I desperately want to get in are:

    Blood Diamond
Bud Abbott Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein
    Nosferatu
    Plan 9 from Outer Space
    Psycho

So, if you have the time, look over the 101 list, look over the 201 list or just the mini-201 list and see if you'd make any trades.

    P.S.

What's the difference between Superman II and Superman II: The Richard Donner's Cut. If I see one, do I need to see the other?
What's the difference between Blade Runner and Blade Runner: The Director's Cut. If I see one, do I need to see the other?

    P.S.S

By the way, I've already seen A Beautiful Mind, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, all of the Batman movies except for Adam West Batman, Terminator, Terminator 2, and Fight Club, which is why they aren't on the list.

    I would exchange:
    Catch Me if you Can
    Hot Shots
    Saving Silverman
    Superbad
and one more (possibly a Rambo sequel?)

    for:
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Alien
    Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Braveheart
    Tron

Not that the upper ones are bad, but I don't think they're as significant as these five. If you want to be fluent in Movie, you need these on the short list. There are a handful of movies on the top list with which I'm not at all familiar, but I didn't want to swap one out due to my own ignorance.

I'd take the Director's Cut over the theatrical cut. When the original was produced, the studio forced the director to give the movie a much different ending that doesn't fit with the tone of the movie. The Director's cut fixes that. However, if you can get your hands on the 25th anniversary Final Cut (which came out a couple years ago), that version is better still. There's no real need to watch more than one version, but regardless of which version you watch it's worth reading about how the ending changed.

Dude, there's Roger Ebert's list of movies I need to see, AFI's list of movies I need to see, as well as a book called 1000 movies I need to see before I die. I'm trying to combine them all into a big list of movies I personally need to see.

And yeah, I plan to start this weekend with a DVR recording of Police Academy. Things are a little crazy since this is the weekend my sister is giving birth to twins, perhaps a bad time to start such an experiment, oh well. I'll try to make the Netflix account tonight so I can get this started.
A question about Netflix, can I allow people to view my list? At this point I'm going to try to let people keep up on what's next on the list.
I'm going with the $8.99 plan that allows 1 movie at a time as much as I want. Of course with the time it takes to mail back the DVD and get a new one, I bet that I won't be able to do more than one movie a week. Does the Netflix online account (which I think I get for free with any plan) have some of these classic movies so I can fill in the gaps?

Oh yeah, minor changes made to the 101 list based on some suggestions.

    Kicking out:
    Desperado
Once Upon A Time in Mexico
    Hot Shots
    Kung Fu Hustle
    Superbad
    Unleashed
    Blade Runner

    Adding:
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Alien
    Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Braveheart
    Tron
Once Upon A Time In The West
    Blade Runner: The Final Cut

    -------
I traded Blade Runner for the Blade Runner Final Cut. I'm amazed the Final Cut was made 25 years later and it's apparently considered the best version.
I'm letting Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico slide because I still have El Mariache and I can hold off on the full trilogy. I lost Kung Fu Hustle, Superbad, and Unleashed because they are all more recent movies, and I tend to not trust if recent movies are truly classics till more time has passed. I'm trading Hot Shots with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure just on Mike Brady's suggestion. I'll stop making changes to the list tonight at midnight, and watch Police Academy tomorrow to get started.

Then you need to see the not as good Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.

Also, Ferris Bueller. Actually, just all John Hughes.

Okay, finished watching 2001: A Space Odyssey yesterday, finished my write up just now.

Final Verdict (Should I watch this movie): Only true film buffs and absolute nerds need enter here. Film buffs for obvious reasons, it’s a classic, with shots that will make you scratch your head and a message that is reinforced every time you think back to another scene, another shot. For nerds, it’s like finding the source for all the references they never understood. Every piece of music, every major scene, even minor lines have been parodied, or mentioned somewhere in something you have watched. It’s almost maddening how many references you feel that you’ve missed out on when you watch this movie. Just be sure to bring something to keep you occupied during the 10 minute long perspective shots.

Seriously though, if you want to know the source of about a thousand different references you never realized were all from one movie, watch it. If you want to see SciFi sets built 4 decades ago, but still somehow seem modern, watch it. But just know that it may be the slowest paced movie ever made, and unless you have some way of making the movie more fun (Rifftrax, drunkedness, etc) you'll be bored.

Did any of you guys watch the movie? What did you think of it?

If you've got the time, read my full summary & review

I can think of plenty of changes to the list. Most glaring? Get the Rambo sequels out that or any list. The first one is still somewhat of a "film" but even I wouldn't put it on a bucket list situation. The sequels are just dumb explosion filled eye candy. Nothing wrong with it but not something to run out and see.

Also Goldfinger. I would put Dr. No above it if you've never seen old Sean Connery Bonds. Not only is it the first movie, it's probably better.

I don't know who steered you into the Porky's, Cannonball Run, Revenge of the Nerds style path but top 101? Hardly. They're pretty much all the same kind of screwball comedy. I'd suggest something classic like Marx Brothers movies before these. It's good to know the roots of comedy. Duck Soup being my first choice of their films.

I'm not suggesting not seeing these movies or anything as harsh as that. I say see all the movies you can before you die, but if it were my list that's the kind of priority changes I'd make.

Eh, I admit the influence of the people I asked can be seen with the action movies and slap stick comedies. Oh well. It's obvious this list has to go beyond 101.

Also worth mentioning, a few of my friends are getting together and trying to do a weekly Netflix Instant Play watch Party. Saturday, 7pm CST, Serenity. If anyone's interested, just post so.

Okay guys, a quick question. I have a bunch of movies saved up on my DVR, some that are on my 101 list, some that I just want to see. The only thing I want to know is if any of these movies are "ruined" by the TV edits.

Armour of God 2: Operation Condor
    Bruce Lee: Fist of Fury
    Good Will Hunting
    Highlander
    Lethal Weapon
    Notting Hill
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
    Police Academy
    Psycho
    Ransom
    Star Wars IV, V, VI
    The Replacements
    Wayne's World

I guarantee that the original Police Academy will be missing a few scenes in a TV edit. Don't remember if it's anything that would ruin it, though. I have to believe that Highlander and Lethal Weapon probably have a few good bits trimmed off, but I think you'll get the gist of it regardless. (Lethal Weapon will probably suffer more from "word substitution" than anything)

But sometimes, an edited version is something you just have to see. Like Die Hard 2, where entire speeches are redubbed.
