There is Nothing Ironic About Show Choir
  • KristiKristi September 2009

I figured I'd start a discussion for Glee, so we're not usurping another...

I loved the pilot, but I too found the second ep somewhat disappointing. It was good, but all the comments I've read about the sound mixing/dubbing for the songs were true. I don't remember it being that bad on the pilot. You can't even tell that the actors do their own vocals, and I know for a fact that they do. It's a shame, really. I also didn't like how the end turned into a music video. I'll keep watching, hoping it will get better.

    Thoughts?

I was disappointed. There wasn't much I liked about this episode at all. I'll watch the next few--maybe it just needs some time to find its footing.

    The good:

Glee is like High School Musical, except more awkward and less bad.

The dubbing feels forcefully juxtaposed. You can see the half second jig between sound and video when there's a song, and it's more prevalent when they insert bits of on screen voice, because you can hear the difference between set and sound studio.

Although the awkwardness of the show gives me some lulz.

Doing a self-ninja from the "What Should I Watch" thread:

Posted By: SeanI just legally purchased with money and watched the pilot episode of Glee, and HOLY CRAP was it good! I posted on Twitter that it isn't my usual tastes, but I think I have to amend that. I tend to dislike musicals that feature spontaneous song-and-dance numbers, and favor ones with more dialogue and song placement that "makes sense". Glee definitely falls into the second category, as the singing and dancing was part of a performance, not just out of the blue. Something I didn't notice until about halfway through the episode was that the background audio was acapella also. And not noticing that is a good thing - means it isn't intrusive.

There was a bit of comedy thrown in, and the song choice was pleasantly all over the map. My only issue with it so far is that we once again see the football/cheerleader squads as "bad guys". A bit tired and stereotypical, but I guess it's the easiest target if you're looking for high school drama. Hopefully they move away from that as the series goes on.

Overall, I would rate it a solid "Fuck Yeah!"

EDIT - Oh, and they somehow managed to make "Don't Stop Believin" sound fresh - no small accomplishment!

Posted By: SeanUmmm, yeah...episode 2 was horrible, IMHO. The things that I loved about the first episode (like the song placement that made sense) were taken away, and in their place were lip-synching that made Disney World animatronics look convincing, and singing at the top of your lungs in a hallway three feet away from people who somehow don't hear you. Cheerleaders are painfully transparently evil pretending to be good, and

the guy in charge of the glee club who was just mocked by one of them doesn't see through it later that day when the same girl says she wants to join the club to support her boyfriend.
During the first ep, I was amazed by the quality of the actors' voices, but because of the horrible voiceovers, now I have no idea if it's even them singing. There was a bit more comedy put in, although one or two of the jokes fell flat

(disco is fine, but 99 Red Balloons is bad music? ; the Big Gulp gag lost all of its punch from the first time)
. I also wasn't crazy about the message of "Hey kids, all music that mentions Jesus should be mocked, and if you decide not to have sex all the time then you're being unnatural." But then again, I generally have a strong dislike for any socio-political messages in my TV shows. And yes, that includes the ones I agree with. I watch TV to escape from all that.
So yeah, didn't mean to go off on a mini-rant there, but I just didn't find anything that came close to the incredibly high quality of the first episode. It wasn't even "it was good, just not AS good as the first one" - it actually made me sad. I'm hoping Ep3 gets back to the things that made the first one so great.

Anyone have thoughts on this week's ep? I liked it much better... although

the football fan in me cringed when Kurt danced before the extra point at the end. He would've been creamed by at least 3 linemen before getting the kick off. And also, if their team sucks so bad, how did they manage to hold the other team to only 6 points?

Other than that, I thought it was a great improvement over the previous 2 weeks.

The football episode was personally funny for me. I know a gay guy who learned to do that whole dance before he was publicly out, and some people were still surprised that he turned out to be gay. Knowing how to do the dance for "All the Single Ladies" is defiantly a big tell.

Posted By: SeanDuring the first ep, I was amazed by the quality of the actors' voices, but because of the horrible voiceovers, now I have no idea if it's even them singing.

I think most of the solos were actually sung by the actors at some point, but they've clearly been pitch-corrected (a big disappointment to me) and otherwise digitally processed. Finn's singing in the shower bit reveals he has pretty poor pitch despite Schuester going ga-ga over it. Couldn't they have found a token "guy's guy" that can actually sing?

The background singers are definitely not the actors. There are always at least twice as many voices as you see on stage (including, at one point, a baritone/bass when Kurt is the only male in the chorus). It could be overdubbed, but why bother when nobody will know the difference? It's likely one group of professional singers doing all the background work.

That little bit of musical anal-retention aside, I've definitely enjoyed the show so far. The personalities still have that cranberry-sauce-fresh-out-of-the-can shape, but I see a lot of potential for something good. It has to be a real challenge producing a regular music-themed show, though, so I only hope that they can keep the quality up. This one's a keeper.

    Oh crap it's on Fox.

  • KristiKristi October 2009

Yeah, I noticed the extra background singers too. The other thing that bothers me a little bit (having been in show choir for 4 years in college) is that they're never out of breath. It doesn't matter how fit you are, dancing and singing at the same time is exhausting, and sometimes you just can't sustain long notes. But most of these things are nit-picky, and the average viewer isn't gonna notice. I just like how it's actually pretty popular, despite being a little quirky and unusual. I think it's High School Musical backlash. For once, I don't mind.
