Just went to an advanced screening of Avatar in wonderful wonderful 3D
was really scared of seeing it cause it got so so so much hype that it was almost like it
wouldn't be able to live up to it no matter what, my general opinion? Absolutely
brilliant, BUT if your going to see it see it in 3D cause i think without it looking as good as it does
the story line isn't enough, not that its a bad story line, just that its not good enough to get by on its own.
Anyone else seen it yet? Opinions?

I personally have little to no desire to see it. As much as I hate South Park, they are right in the idea that the movie is essentially "Dances with Smurfs" but with alot of action. I hope I've proven wrong because I haven't been to a movie in a while and I'd hate for it to be Sherlock Homes.

lol. I saw that in my feeds yesterday. I'm surprised that they would put that much protection on a file for a movie theater.

Because some executive figures if you protect it with enough DRM, it won't leak early. They can't comprehend the power of the internet.

Anyone who tells you that this movie is not one of the best of 2009 is a blankity blank blank. Watch it.

I don't know if this is one of the best movies of this year, but it certainly was the prettiest. I've said it elsewhere, but the storyline is basically Ferngully with a little Pocahontas. The amazing visuals more than make up for an unoriginal storyline. The acting was so-so, but again, so pretty. It was definitely an intense experience. It will be interesting to see where this takes moviemaking in the future.

  • I saw it in IMAX 3D, it was beautiful. Yeah the story is totally dances with wolves, but that said I thought the story was very well executed. I'm going to see it again, and I look forward to more development of the IP here in books and future movies.

Avatar Prequel Novel will be out late 2010. How many of you plan to ear-read this?

James Cameron writes/plots/structures his movies on a very childlike level. They are basic, simple, often predictable, and easy to grasp. Here are the White Hats. Here are the Black Hats. Here's what happens when they meet each other.
And this is the genius part of it: He gives you enough information to start thinking for yourself about the grander scheme, but if you're the kind of person who's not inclined to do that, you're not insulted or offended at concepts that fly over your head.
By using that approach, Cameron (as a world builder) can now focus more intently on actually crafting an entirely new existence for the viewer.

I absolutely loved Avatar. I'd been on the bandwagon for it since waaaaaaaaay back when I first read about it being a gleam in Cameron's eye. And I was not at all disappointed.

True, the story is thin and the characters are not as fleshed out as they may be in other movies, but this really didn't detract from the viewing experience for me. And I'm not saying that it's only redeeming quality is The Pretty (tm) - just that everything works so well together. The basic elements compliment the fantastic elements to form a very cohesive whole.

I've seen plenty of movies that were eyesplodingly gorgeous and utter shit to listen to as well as emotionally packed, written-in-gold scripts that were somewhere south of "lacking" in production design. And I've liked them for their various strong suits, but Avatar actually manages to blend things together very well.
