Am I the only Fancy Bastard with a massive boner for Mass Effect 2? I've been a big fan of the first one. While it wasn't perfect, it's flaws were easy to over look because the story was amazingly detailed and deep.

Agreed; I felt the combat was absolutely horrid, and the side missions were ridiculously repetitive, but I left the game feeling extremely entertained and I'm having a hard time waiting for the sequel. What was your favorite scene/character/environment/etc.?

Also: Dram and I have concluded that the standard box art is absolutely terrible. To Summarize our fake board meeting: HALO, BUT IN SPACE. WITH GUNS. ALSO: BOOBIES.
I think I lost it about here:

Dram: "WE HAVE BLUE CHICKS. SEXIN' IT UP"
    Me: "ALSO: GREEN CHICKS."
    Dram: "MIXIN' IT UP."
Me: "OUR MEN LOOK LIKE THEY'RE TAKING A DUMP.
    IN THEIR
    SPACE SUITS."
    Dram: "STINKIN' IT UP"

However; we both agree that the Collector's Edition Boxart targets an entirely different demographic, to the point that they seem like two completely different games.

  • ArcysArcys January 2010

I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition just for the box art. It's very sexy. As to the original, I'd have to say the Citadel was my favorite place. Favorite character is a tie between Liara, Garrus, and Tali. I hated Kaiden, because he was a useless pussy. He just came across as this whiny little, "why me" character.

    hehe I concur regarding Kaiden.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
I couldn't have killed him any faster unless I detonated that nuke myself.
I'd have to say that I really enjoyed Wrex was my favorite character, with Garrus as runner up; because I really enjoyed seeing what little I did of Wrex's views on a system which does not fit the problems of a species, and Garrus' amorality in the face of a "greater good"
    Spoilers (highlight to read)
In some ways, he's the closest one to The Operative in Mass Effect.

  • ArcysArcys January 2010

Have you read any of the books? There's two out with a third incoming.

To be honest, I've been extremely wary of them. And as much as I enjoy the universe, I really like the concept of playing "From Shepard's perspective", so I don't want to know anything that they don't present in the main titles. At least until the trilogy is resolved. I'm bizarre, I know. It just seems like a really neat experiment.

  • ArcysArcys January 2010

Well, I'm a sucker for universe storyline, so I have them both. The guy that writes the games also writes the books, so it's all nice and tidy.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
You also get to see what the Migrant Fleet is like in one of the books. The Quarian storyline really interests me. I was giddy when Tali was announced as a playable character again. Plus Adam Baldwin is voicing a Quarian!

Neat, I am as well; but I felt this was more of a priority for my enjoyment of the Trilogy.

I pre-ordered the Collectors Edition as well, and despite how ridiculously excited I am for this game, I've chosen to wait until Friday to play it- for the sake of my semester exam grades.

So far this game completely blows my expectations out of the water. I loved the first ME but felt it was deeply flawed. Bioware has addressed practically everything wrong with the first game. The only downside is there is a mineral collection mini game that drags but is necessary to get your crew the best gear. Even then it's almost a relaxing distraction considering how intense the combat gets in this game.

I concur, I can't wait until we get deep into spoiler territory. I say wait at least another week.

While I really liked ME2 I felt there were some problems with it. I'm not a fan of tedious equipment management, But I think they went overboard in completely removing the inventory. Without inventory there is basically no looting to speak of (something I really enjoyed from ME1 and I think added a lot of replay value). They could have come to a better compromise rather than just removing it. Also ME2 is much more shooter centric with a reduced focus on biotics and tech powers. (Again the biotics and tech powers from ME1 were something I enjoyed and having them pretty much neutered in ME2 was a let down). The planet scanning minigame gets really boring and I liked driving around in the Mako better myself. I played through ME1 several times (no longer have the saves). I'm just starting my second playthrough of ME2 and I can't see myself getting too far.
It was fun but I enjoyed the first one more.

  • must get game ...... need more money..... well its back to the corner with me.

  • FrackTruckFrackTruck February 2010

Friends and (fancy) bastards, through an unfortunate series of events I have an extra Cerberus network code.

If you purchase a used copy of ME2 I will give it to you so you may access the free and paid DLC.

limit one per customer, well limit one overall, void where prohibited, sexual favors not required as payment but accepted

PM me on the forums or DM me through the twitters for the code

in other news I finished the game today...I want ME3 like tomorrow. I really hope they have even more continuance integration in the next game since all my team members survived

As do I. I won't be disappointed though if many of them become side characters much like
    Spoilers (highlight to read)
Wrex, Liara, Kaidan or Ashley became in this game. I really could do with spending less time with Jack and the Justicar. They could also make some of the existing characters more interesting. I would be delighted if they did something with Thane or Legion along the lines of what they did with Garrus in this game. One thing I hope is since this is the 3rd of the trilogy that not as much time is spent setting up new characters. The Reapers are coming so I really don't want to spend the game trekking around to gain loyalty fixing my crew's daddy issues.

  • FrackTruckFrackTruck February 2010

I have a few theories as to how the next game is going to start at least,

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
I'm guessing you'll start with the same crew as you ended with, they're bound to perfect that conversion software, and I'm guessing they did a lot of the writing of 2 with 3 in mind (unlike 1 to 2) and in the first section of the game Im guessing you stop working for Cerberus at one point and go solo. I cant imagine continuing the Cerberus mechanic for two games since it really was a controversial sticking point at the start of 2. The general theme of 3 might very well be collecting alliances from all the alien races a la Dragon Age and preparing and executing a massive assault into darkspace. It would take galactic decades for the reaper fleet to just fly into council space so a time jump of that long is too infeasible.

Regarding the "team" from 2 continuing, Im guessing Thane will die in the interim time, or very early in 3. Jack and Zaeed will go regardless of loyalty. Tali, grunt, garrus, and legion will stay, Mordin I cant guess on. The operatives might stay or go depending on the cerberus connection, Samara will likely return to Asari space, Morinth escaping to continue her evils.

Speaking of Morinth, I found a vid on yourtubes that shows her "romance" scene, it made me lol

Massive boner for Mass Effect 2? Guilty as charged.

Just finished it last night, and I absolutely loved it.

  • Locke+Cole117Locke Cole117 February 2010

I'll post more when I get the time, but I just finished it last night.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
I managed to lose Zaeed and Mordin. Mordin's death was so fast I didn't even realize it; and Zaeed's was near-comical. Though I almost lost Garrus as the Reaper started breaking the platforms, and ended up screaming "NO! NO!" at the TV like Christian Bale.

  • ArcysArcys February 2010

I finished my first play through a few days after release. OH-AHEM-GEE.

    Spoilers (highlight to read)
Characters I can live without: Zaeed and Grunt. I felt no real connection to these characters.
Characters I loved: Legion, Thane, Tali, Mordin, and not as much Jack. I loved having Legion in my squad and how his loyalty mission expanded the geth part of the story. Thane is just a right-out badass, and I'll be sad when he dies of his condition. I'll talk about Tali later. Mordin is just full of hilarious lines... his struggle with the morality of his actions is an amazing story. I liked Jack, but never got too invested in her.

Alignment: Paragon. I've decided that I can never play the bad side of any of BioWares games. It's just not in me.

Paramore: I went with Tali. Story, as we all know, is BioWare's MO, and they do it quite well. After finishing up ME1, I went and read the 2 novels that were written by they guy has written both games, Drew Karpyshyn. One of the novels not only fleshes out Cerberus, but delves deeper in the the Quarian storyline. I felt much more invested in Tali's loyalty mission than any other part of the game, because I knew more about the Quarians than the game presents. I had a fanyurism when you meet Tali and her squad the first time on Freedom's Progress. If you're like me, you listen to all the dialogue any character has to give, even the investigation (left side) ones. When Prazza explains why they don't like Cerberus I nearly exploded, because I knew what he was talking about.

    Who Lived/Died?: Everybody lived!

Blow it up?: Hell yeah I blew it up. Also told "the Man" to shove it.

Once you've finished it, play it on insanity.
    That shit be crazy.

  • So I finished this past weekend, I'm really looking forward to the next instalment. While My first play through was primarily on the paragon path, some of those you talk to much so I shoot you renegade interrupts were just damn hilarious.

  • I know the ideal timeframe is slipping, but I want to write an in-depth article about the storytelling aspects of Mass Effect 2. However, I need documentation of numerous playthroughs by different people. Would the Fancy Bastards be willing to complete a Google form about their experience in the game, so that I can gather data for this endeavor?

    Sure, I'm down.

  • I'm working on the general section of the form (the form is going to be broken down by the "acts", followed by a "overall review" of the experience); how do these questions sound? did I miss any?

    1. Name/Gender/Bio of Shepard
    2. New/Imported Playthrough?
    3. External sources of information regarding the Mass Effect Universe consumed (Books, etc.)
    4. downloadable content used

I would add a section about the new DLC and people going back to the game after a single play through

  • Posted By: FrackTruckI would add a section about the new DLC and people going back to the game after a single play through

I'll try to update the form according to DLC as much as possible, but the form is written for an individual Commander Shepard (They are referred to as a character, not as the player). So someone who has played through the game multiple times (I have not) would enter the form for each play through. make Sense?

  • FrackTruckFrackTruck April 2010

well I was thinking more of like yes no stuff about whether or not they'd go back into a completed game to experience the DLC or to start a new game/continue a completed game for achievements/experience
but those are more questions for the player not about their particular shepard

Yeah, that fits into the general category, thank you :)
