Every Star Wars Novel? How Sad.
  • mSeligamSeliga May 2008

What the hell is wrong with me? I have to much damn time to have read every single Star Wars novel.

Having said that, my favorite has got to be the Thrawn ones. My favorite EU character.

  • FerrosFerros May 2008

I've read a far few of them, stopped reading when they started to focus on the Solo twins, little to Sweet Valley High for me. Gotta agree though the Thrawn books were excellent.

  • EddieEddie May 2008

I liked the series of six that involved the prophets and the bastard son of the emperor and Zorba the Hutt.

And I third that Thrawn was a BAMF.

  • I've read most of the cannon stuff...still working on NJO

I started with X-wing (classic IMO)

No joke. Let Zahn himself do it.

I stopped reading when Luke fell in love with a spaceship. That pretty much did it for me.

I suppose I am. I just remember being young and innocent and thinking, "Oh boy! More Star Wars!" And I was sorely disappointed.

Course, it should have readied me for the prequels, alas, it did not.

I read a lot of Star Wars novels when I was younger but if you ask me what they were about I draw a complete blank.

my favorite one would have to be crystal star , or darksaber.; god the hutts are dumb.

I actually quite enjoyed the Han Solo triliogy though I have to admit that the Thrawn books are really good novels even outside of the Star Wars setting.

Yeah, those are the only ones I'll recommend or even keep on my bookshelf. The rest of 'em, gah. And I'm with Aaron. I set out to read everything I could set during the Clone Wars for an interview, but don't remember a single thing that happened. I don't think I finished any of the books properly, more like skimmed.

Apparently, the novels are the only good thing left in the SW Extended Universe. Gabe from PA always lauds how awesome the books are. I've never read them, but there doesn't seem to be any shame in it.

Agree, I used to go get a new one out of the library every weekend, but eventually it got to the point where I was literally halfway in before I realised I'd read it a month previously. There are too many and the stories are so drawn out it eventually becomes tedious to read. And most of the crap they keep grafting onto canon is plain ridiculous: Secret Hands and Clones and Apprentices, my ass!

However the free audiobook Starwars.com gave away to downloaders last year-ish was what got me into listening to audiobooks and podcasts on my Sansa ("*gasp* it plays music AND it reads to me too!!")... which eventually got me into HE, so there was some good come of the whole franchise-thing.

the books are great because all the authors (most under random house) consult one another for creating continuity. Theres just so much information out there and it all actually makes sense

  • lardboylardboy June 2009

Can anybody suggest a reading list for the Star Wars EU novels?

I'm thinking I might get into them but have consulted wikipedia and there are a metric-fuckton and I don't know where to start.

Maybe I'll start with something around the kotor period.

Also I think it was Joel that mentioned a book based on the lives of the support crew on the deathstar does anybody have the name of that one?

  • FrackTruckFrackTruck June 2009

http://timelineuniverse.net/StarWarsTimeline.htm lists every single expanded universe item in chronological order, sorted by era.

Myself I started with the X-wing book series which is the first set of novels that take place after Endor.

  • KaseyHawrylak18KaseyHawrylak18 December 2009

Yeah, the X-wing Books were definitely one of my first SW expanded universe reads, but I read the prequels to Star Wars Episode 1, that outlined how Obi-Wan became Qui-Gon's apprentice, first. Also, definitely check out the Legacy Of The Force series, that outlines the Jaina/Jacen chronicles once they're old enough to not be so lame (Sweet Valley High). It gets pretty dicey. After that, the series goes into kind of a desperate attempt to outdo the amazing addition to Star Wars Canon that those books represented. They don't do a very good job, and don't really waste your time on those ones. Also, the Bounty Hunter series is pretty classic, I'm vehemently for the concept that Boba Fett is utterly indestructible. If you want to jump into the X wing series, read Starfighters Of Adumar FIRST, since it's really the easiest Star Wars read you'll have, it's not only hysterical, but in a perfect world it's exactly what any canon expansion would look like: absolutely no Jedi.

  • KaseyHawrylak18KaseyHawrylak18 December 2009

It's messed up, but that book is number 8 in the series, but it's the easiest to read one in the Star Wars X-wing series.

  • mSeligamSeliga December 2009

Speaking of SW books, I read Karen Traviss (Republic Commando, Legacy books) is quitting because they are going to turn the Mandalorians into pacifists in the Clone Wars show. I wonder how thats going to work the last series of books dealt heavily with them.

  • KaseyHawrylak18KaseyHawrylak18 December 2009

The last series did, yeah. Karen Traviss really did an amazing job writing in the Legacy series, she managed to create a whole ton of incredibly believable new canon, and she will be missed. Is she quitting out of protest? And the Mando'ade are pacifists, when they're not being paid to be otherwise...

  • mSeligamSeliga December 2009

She essentially is quitting out of protest. She said that she couldn't continue her story lines since LucasFilm was going in their new directions with the Clone Wars show.
