I figure it can't hurt to see how wide and far the musical tastes of HE fans spread so throw up the names of bands or artists you enjoy and let the hearty discussion and exchange of ideas commence. You'll see a trend in my picks, mostly rock/metal stuff, that's what i get for being raised on Motley Crue and Whitesnake.

    Clutch
    Queens of the stone age
    Reel Big Fish
    Chimaira
    Faith no more
    Dry kill logic
    Killswitch Engage

    Dropkick Murphys
    Black Label Society
    Weezer

I'll listen to most anything excluding most rap. There's a few rap songs I like, but in general I dislike it. A few highlights include:

    Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace (or anything else that sounds like these two)
Evanescence (Amy Lee makes me... nevermind)

I've been looping Scissor Sisters I Can't Decide for a couple of days now. The difference between the lyrics and the jolly music just tickles me. It was featured as an ending song to one of the Zero Punctuation reviews a few weeks back.

aw i kind of want to kiss 15step. does anyone have last.fm on this forum? if so you should be my pal.

i think that it's really weird when someone says that they like "everything but rap" or "everything except rap and country." i think that you're cutting yourself off from a whole culture of music. by closing your mind to hip hop you're missing the roots, mos def, lil wayne, de la soul and so many more fantastic artists. there are just as many cases for not listening to rock music (hinder, 3 doors down, stuff and junk).

since lists are the name of the game and this is already a giant comment i guess i'll just name stuff:

I don't think the statement is necessarily prescriptive. It's not so easy to dig down into a genre and find something to your taste if you're not immersed in it, so there are some genres where people are only ever going to hear the artists who get a lot of airplay and form their judgments on that. It sucks when it's a genre you like, but reality is that not everyone has time to listen to everything.

@jacob666: much love for Klaus Nomi. You ever see "The Nomi Song"?

"Favourite music" varies for me. As in, I'm like a ferret on crystal meth when it comes to my music selection. Right now, I'm on a HUGE Electric Light Orchestra kick. I can't be sad while listening to some ELO.

  • Oh boy, this could take a while...ok off the top of my head...

    Pearl Jam(all time favorite)
    Tool
    Nirvana
    Alice in Chains
    Soundgarden

    Dio
    Dr Dre
    Ice Cube
    Snoop Dog
    Prodigy
    Prince
    Parliament Funkadelic
    Green Day

Those are pretty much the bands/artists I could listen to at any time and not get tired of them. I'm currently enjoying Against Me!, Flyleaf, and Ludo quite a bit.

No sir, you are not. I saw him live, solo and acoustic a few years back. Great show.

  • SeandalfSeandalf May 2008

While I've found that I'm more about individual songs than the artists, many of whom come and go with only one or two good songs to show for their commercial efforts, there are a few whose albums I've amassed in great enough quantity to justify listing them here...in no particular order:

    AC/DC
    Billy Joel
    George Carlin
    Charlie Daniels Band
    Pink Floyd
    Ozzy
    "Weird Al" Yankovic
    KISS
    Garth Brooks
    Boston
    Led Zeppelin
    P.D.Q. Bach

Like I said, there are many others, but for me, they're only good for the handful of songs I came to appreciate from radio airplay or inclusion in Grand Theft Auto soundtracks, e.g. Rick James. Bitch. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

  • RazzRazz June 2008

In Alphabetical order, cause that's how it is!

APC, Alice in Chains, Coldplay ,Incubus, Live (Well, the Awake cd at least), Mogwai, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Postal Service (Yes, I liked them before they were in commercials :P), RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, Static-X, STP, Tenacious D, White Stripes, TOOL, Weezer.

I like a lot of Techno and Soundscapes-type music as well, but they're not really bands so, eh.

  • larnsturtlarnsturt June 2008

Oh Nomi... Someone borrowed my Nomi Song DVD and kept it. Bitches.

    Anyway, since you asked:

    The Avett Brothers
    Langhorne Slim
    MGMT
    The Dodos
Sean Watkins (and all of Nickel Creek, but esp. short-little him)
    Skip James
    Wilco
    Modest Mouse
    Andrew Bird
    Regina Spektor
    The Mountain Goats
    M. Ward
    Belle & Sebastian

Oh and Queen. And Michael Jackson. And maybe a little Billy Joel. But only a little.

Holy shit dude, someone else who knows! It's a miracle!

Some of the jokes took years for me to get, like getting around to asking my Queens-raised father about Horn and Hardart, or finally learning about Pruit Igoe, Phillip Glass and Einstein on the Beach after the first GTA IV trailer. And the Beethoven sportscast just refuses to get old. :D

I was a huge classical nut for over a decade of my life, and an avid amateur violinist. You can't do that without having at least a passing familiarity with the works of the twenty-first of J.S. Bach's twenty children. ;)

  • SeandalfSeandalf June 2008

Ironically, it didn't really happen with me in high school, when I was more musically inclined (though I had heard the name once or twice), but rather in my first go-round in college. That's where I found more of the early albums and the book...it helped having a friend who knew classical music enough to explain the more obscure jokes, e.g. What's My Melodic Line.

Have you ever seen them? BNL put on an awesome concert. One of the best live bands ever.

Anyway, to add to the list....
    Metallica (pre-St. Anger, anyway)
    Finger Eleven
    AC/DC
    Ray LaMontagne
    Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
Matt Caplan (he actually used to play Mark in Rent... and is a fine musician in his own right)
anything from the Soundtrack of Once (check it out, the music is totally worth it!)
    Peggy Lee
    New Found Glory
    The Calling
Evanescence (so wish I could sing like Amy Lee)
    Flogging Molly
The Boondock Saints (the director from the movie plays in the band... anyone know the movie?)
    Dropkick Murphy's
    Silvertide
    OAR
... that's all I can think of right now.... I tend to gravitate toward soundtracks rather than whole albums of one band. So, Good Soundtracks*: Daredevil, The Punisher, Once, Firefly, Tomb Raider, The Matrix, Titan AE, Happy Feet, Center Stage, Sahara, Knight's Tale, Transformers... that's all I got for now....

*this in no way reflects on my opinion of the movie. Daredevil was crap, but the music was good.
