i think that it's really weird when someone says that they like "everything but rap" or "everything except rap and country." i think that you're cutting yourself off from a whole culture of music. by closing your mind to hip hop you're missing the roots, mos def, lil wayne, de la soul and so many more fantastic artists. there are just as many cases for not listening to rock music (hinder, 3 doors down, stuff and junk).

I don't think the statement is necessarily prescriptive. It's not so easy to dig down into a genre and find something to your taste if you're not immersed in it, so there are some genres where people are only ever going to hear the artists who get a lot of airplay and form their judgments on that. It sucks when it's a genre you like, but reality is that not everyone has time to listen to everything. -

Some of the jokes took years for me to get, like getting around to asking my Queens-raised father about Horn and Hardart, or finally learning about Pruit Igoe, Phillip Glass and Einstein on the Beach after the first GTA IV trailer. And the Beethoven sportscast just refuses to get old. :D -

I was a huge classical nut for over a decade of my life, and an avid amateur violinist. You can't do that without having at least a passing familiarity with the works of the twenty-first of J.S. Bach's twenty children. ;) -
Ironically, it didn't really happen with me in high school, when I was more musically inclined (though I had heard the name once or twice), but rather in my first go-round in college. That's where I found more of the early albums and the book...it helped having a friend who knew classical music enough to explain the more obscure jokes, e.g. What's My Melodic Line.
