Screen Resolution
  • ArcysArcys May 2008

    Quick question:

What screen resolution do you use?

1280x1024, but I keep my browser's viewport at a max width of 1024. An excess of horizontal eye movement gives me headaches.

  • 1400x1050 on my laptop, 1680x1050 on my primary desktop monitor. I have a second smaller one that runs at a lower resolution. Why do you ask?

  • SeanSean May 2008

1920x1200 With the amount of crap I have running at once, I need all the real estate I can get!

  • dougdoug May 2008

1280x854 - the max of my 15" PowerBook. I'd really like some more dpi; as it is, I tend to keep only the active program visible--there's just no room for clutter on the screen.

I'm designing a web page something at the moment. I was just curious. They say to design a web page for 1024x768, but that just seems so small now-a-days! Plus that resolutions messes with my design.

1440 x 900, yay for cheap chinese LCD's and their weird resolutions.

No doubt! Moving to a two-monitor setup has really been liberating. One of those hard-to-go-back kind of changes. I keep ramming windows against the edge of my laptop screen hoping they'll find somewhere to hang out for a little bit.

6 months ago I would have totally agreed with you. But with the recent trendiness of "subnotebooks" resolution has really made a backslide. The most popular subnotebook - the Asus Eee - only has a resolution of 800x480!

  • ArcysArcys May 2008

Such people should be made to use portable style sheets, if you know what I mean.

  • I won't argue with that! It's just one more layer in the design process though (which for me would represent a significant amount of work, though I'm sure it's second nature for you pros).

I don't buy much into the miniaturization trend anyway, but that may be a side effect of having freakishly large hands.

  • ArcysArcys May 2008

I'm hardly a pro. Amateur at best!

What are your target demographics? See if you can "borrow" browser and resolution stats from sites that target similar groups.

I think it's a fallacy to assume everyone runs their browsers maximized, especially those with extremely large amounts of desktop real estate.

To be brutally honest, if you're more concerned with how pretty your page looks than with your readers' eye health, you probably won't get much traffic from me. Unless you're in total control your audience's browsing experience, flexible is more important than, "But it breaks my layout!"

My crappy moniter only does 1024x768, even though i have a 880gt. its a waste of such power. And I'm about to get another to SLi that shit,

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady June 2008

You're going to run dual 8800GTs for a 1024x768 monitor?! Please tell me it's because you play Crysis 12 hours a day... you could get a much better monitor for the same price as that second card!

  • mSeligamSeliga June 2008

I plan to get a new monitor to. But have a upgrade flow chart for my computer(sad right?). Monitor is right after second card. Then double my Ram(2GB), then get a blu-ray drive, then get a TB hd....

Nah, not really. If you're planning on putting together a cutting edge system you kind of need to do it in installments. I'm just relieved to hear that your video setup is going to get some use. If I could be so brazen as to make a recommendation, though, I'd suggest shooting for 3GB RAM. It depends on what apps you use of course, but I've found having an excess of RAM has given a huge boost in performance to my computer. You can usually pick it up pretty cheap, too - hang out on Slickdeals.net and wait for a great deal to come up.

Glad to help! Incidentally, if you're looking for computer parts and don't want to wait for a slickdeal, pricewatch.com is the way to go. There are a couple other deal sites that are good, but I like slickdeals for their selection. Advice: always check the comments on a deal that interests you. The commenters are seasoned deal veterans and they always have good tips, workarounds, and warnings.

RAM is like an addiction. Once you get 2 gigs, then you'll want just another, and then the last gig to finish it off. Still your satisfaction lingers. Soon you spend the money to move over to a 64-bit architecture and add another 3 gigs. Your parents and friends tell you to stop. RAM is consuming your life. Your girlfriend left you for that poser geek who lives down the street who can only recite half of Holy Grail. That's okay, you don't need that wench anyway. You can spend the money you were spending on her on more computer upgrades. Now you have a respectable terabyte of DDR in your hog. You spiral further down into the depths of computer upgrades.

I'm telling you man... cocaine is a much better addiction to have.

Ha! Well said! But I'm seriously jonesin' for some 64-bit architecture now. I can almost taste it....

When Windows 7 comes out(2009/2010), I'll move over to 64. I'm still on 32 right now becasue my copy of Vista was a gift and they got me the 32 bit version.

No rush. Very few applications are developed for 64-bit architecture. The only real benefit is the improved memory addressing, which you're unlikely to need in the short term. But it does get you geek cred...

Jesus, I'm sick and tried of Cyberpower. I wanted to build my own computer but everybody(including the people who control my7 money) told me get one from them. Oh sure. Except my video card has been crashing for the last month non stop. Took me that long to get ahold of someone.

  • Mike+BradyMike Brady June 2008

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I don't know much about Cyberpower - I assume they're one of the 3 or 4 companies that advertises in every PC magazine. Sorry to hear that their customer service isn't up to snuff. Good luck!
