I wear my Browncoat shirt whenever it's clean. I got it before it was even on Thinkgeek, from a con a couple years ago. And my go-to gift for pretty much everyone is Firefly Season 1, even if they aren't partial to sci-fi.

Not to necrobump, but someone mentioned something in the Inigo Montoya thread that reminded me of that thing on Whedonesque where someone wrote a fake review of season 6 of Firefly. It was both uplifting and sad, since not even Firefly could maintain quality for 6 seasons. At least, according to the writer.

The article was completely fake, but the problems they had with "the season" just sounded realistic enough. These sounded like problems people would have posted for Angel Season 4 or Buffy Season 6 and 7.

Nah, REALLY? I wouldn't have guessed.

You know, one of these days I'm gonna make it to the second DVD from the season. *nudge*

It DOES look completely trite, but I don't care, I'll follow my Captain anywhere!

Yeah, it doesn't help that "Serenity" is also the name of the first episode. I ran into that quandry when I watched the series. With the recent trend of backdoor pilots it's hard to be certain where a feature should fit in. (#thingaboutdicks)

    Attention all NYC-area Fancy Bastards:
Your favorite captain will be appearing at the Apple Store at 6PM on Sept.18th, and POSSIBLY at the Whedon event at the Peter Sharp Theater the following Monday.

    That is all.

Nashoba is teaching one of his Sims 3 characters to play the guitar. I swear the stupid thing sounds so much like the Firefly theme that I had to do a double-take (double-listen?).

So I've just started watching Firefly, and it's exactly what a space-related sitcom/drama should be. It's incredible, and reminds me of a movie made in Quebec, in french, that I watched when I was like 12. Essentially, in that movie, they were a crew of astronauts searching for a suitable planet to replace Earth with, and it was hilarious, with a similar crew/Captain relationship as on board Serenity. I cannot remember the title though, grrr.

so I bought the Serenity RPG rulebook before it goes out of print (which is my primary fear for niche products), and I really want the additional rulebook and the source book regarding spaceships and weaponry. Has anyone had a chance to play the RPG?

I haven't played it, but I did read through the rulebook maybe a year ago. From what I recall, it seemed like the entire thing is very freeform, almost to the point of being confusing. The GM sets the scene, but there isn't an actual gameboard. I have a pretty limited history with pen-and-paper RPGs, but this seems less like a game, and more like group storytelling. Having said that, the "buying a better roll" mechanic is interesting, and I'd love to see a game actually run to hopefully prove my criticisms wrong. EDIT: The Firefly RPG website has some fan-made extras, but it looks like it hasn't been updated in quite a while.

Allright, Without Mike Brady's help, I would not have been able to accomplish this. But here are some Rules for Movement:

    • The Map is tile-based, DnD 4e Standard (I think they've come up with one of the easiest and most versatile movement rules for the modern RPG)

    • Movement is an action (just like firing a gun or mounting a horse), and requires a skill check.

    • The Movement Roll is based on an Agility + Vitality Roll; and the result determines how many tiles a player can move in that turn.

    • Players can use Extra Points given to them to improve their rolls.

I haven't had much time to look at the rulebook, but that seems to be how the system works; and I'll adjust if necessary. Essentially: Maps are used, and moving is like any other action in the game.

For those with Blu-Ray players, Amazon has the complete series on 3 disks for $56. There are a few interviews that weren't on the original DVDs, plus an extra episode commentary. If we didn't just go on a movie-buying spree, I'd jump on that.
