The Experiment
  • joeljoel June 2008

I'll use this thread for anything concerning the "The Experiment." (ya' know. the one where I'm trying to make a living off this comic?)

As of right now you can preview a few new pages dealing with The Experiment:

    http://hijinksensue.com/experiment/
    http://hijinksensue.com/experiment/story/
    http://hijinksensue.com/experiment/manifesto/

These pages basically detail what the Experiment is, why Im doing it, why I started the comic, and what I hope to achieve. Please read and share with your friends. The more people that know about this endevour, the better (hopefully) it will turn out.

I'm 60 days into the Experiment. I'll post a video blog this week with an update.

I think it's really inspiring, Joel. We will help you build your empire, one geek at a time.

Good luck man, it takes guts to do what you're doing.

  • Yeah Joel, this is inspiring. I'm doing some of the similar stuff with my own software development. Only a few days from being able to sell my first few apps.

Seeing what you are trying to accomplish here has made me want to find out what I really want to do in life. It just feels so overwhelming. The whole, "What will happen if I make this decision?" question is one that I'm having the hardest time answering.

Also, kudos on the comic. Many of the webcomics that I read are only focused on video games, but HE encompasses the whole kit-n-caboodle of geekery. It's also because of you that I'm going to give Firefly another chance. 5 billion fancy bastards can't be wrong...

it's really nice to know that there are people out there who just go for it, godspeed!

  • Ok, I want to marry your manifesto. Is that legal? Seriously though, I think its incredibly awesome that you are doing this. So, good luck with everything, and we Fancy Bastards will do our part and spread the joy of HE like herpes at a frat party.

oh! also, is there a place that fancy bastards can post links to their own personal experiments? is it in show and tell? i bet it's in show and tell.

You know Finland (at least two of us Finns) supports you, man!

If you ever get a book out, I'll be sure to force my local bookstore(s) to order it here \o/

Not a bad idea if there's enough material, didn't Penny Arcade do something similar too? I bet more than a few FB's would dig deep for the first year of hijinks in ye-olde-booke-style-vision.

As for the experiment, best of luck to you Joel! Must take a lot of nerve to try and pull off something so ambitious.

Typo in the manifesto: "Why can’t a draw comics for a living?"

Not a bad bag of articles. Inspiring and informative. I myself would love to do something similar to the experiment, be it a webcomic or something similar. Hopefully a time will come when I get the opportunity.

Yeah, a few webcomics have done that. My local Tabletop gaming store has PA and Order of the Stick comics right next to Sandman and Spiderman.

  • Joel, the experiment really is inspiring.
Before first seeing your experiment video I was thinking many of the same things myself. I'm hoping that since I have just moved to a newer, bigger, more happening city, I will be further inspired to try to create more opportunities for myself.

Keep putting out quality material and I'll keep supporting you.
